My favorite of recent threads revealed to me (and others) a treasure trove of websites with downloadable pop tunes from 1900-1930. I have filled hours of cassettes with everything from “Painting the Clouds with Sunshine” to “I’ve Got the ‘Yes, We Have No Bananas’ Blues” to “Make a Noise Like a Hoop and Roll Away.”
Bliss.
Now, does anyone know any sites providing pop tunes from the 1940s and '50s" Or are we into sticky copyright territory there?
Why would 1920s pop tunes like Frankie Trumbauer’s “Charleston” be pretty much free of copyright woes, but, say, Artie Shaw’s “Nightmare” might get one into trouble? Are the college kids really that much into Artie Shaw and Glenn Miller?
Yeah, but Paul Whiteman and the Andrew Sisters (and Der Bingle)are so square they’re cube, so that’s okay. Even hep cats like me enjoy their musical stylings.
And I’m fine with Guin, who only likes Miller because she wants to sleep with him.
The Board is running sooooo slowly now I can’t do a search–but the thread was called “A Site for Sore Ears,” here in Cafe Society, within the past month or so.
Hmmm, that link doesn’t work, Guin: I get “Forbidden—You don’t have permission to access /~ambrosia/ on this server. Apache/1.3.6 Server at www.buffnet.net Port 80.”
