Any advice for a novice webmaster?

I’d like to set up my own website where I can put up a portfolio of my cartoons, animation, short films, and writing. I’ve never put together a real website before and am not too sure where to start.

Where should I go to get server space? I’m looking for something that’s cheap (or free if possible) but I don’t want pop-up ads out the wazoo. I also want to have enough room to eventually post parts of or all of my short films (the first is fifteen minutes long, the second is twenty minutes long) and my animation and editing reels (less than three minutes apiece). How much is reasonable to pay for a website? What programs are best for putting websites together? Any advice?

I guess it’s not all-important that the entire short films fit on the website. Perhaps I’ll submit them to ifilms or atom films and just have a link to them on the website… if that makes it any easier.

Hey, pezwookiee … I don’t know if I can endorse specific sites on here, but if you’re looking for a good place to host, take a look at http://www.bigbluebang.com . They’re a community server project, with a wacky group of artists, djs and programmers, and dammed good high quality hosting that starts at about $5/month… I do believe there is quite a lot of space available for the regular user, and no limit on bandwidth so far. Talk to “the management” and I think they can set you up with something. Tell em Fu sent you.
