Trump’s political positions are pro-worker and pro-union, with the government putting its thumb on businesses to keep them in line with the political goals of the central government. He himself appears to not give a damn about homosexuality and, while he’s not excited about encouraging toddlers to question their gender, I’m not sure that that you have to be deeply red to be skeptical of that.
If you ask which flag he’s flying, to be sure, the man is a Republican. But a pirate flies whatever flag he needs to get in to range to take your ship. It’s not really the best indicator of a guy’s political positions, relative to what he actually does.
That super right wing dictator in South America, Nayib Bukele, ran for office on a rocialist platform and ran his country as socialist until it suited his purpose better to call himself “right wing”, as a way to get in with the US and Donald Trump. The US press accepted his word for it and happily announced him as such. What did he actually change, other than a name?
The National Socialists of early 20th century Europe described themselves as 2nd generation socialists, trying to fix the flaws of socialism and worker rights movements, by directly taking over government and running it directly by and for the common worker. They and the Communists hated and killed each other less because they were on opposite sides of the spectrum so much as that they were fighting for the mind share of the same demographic. Socialists and Socialists can absolutely hate and want to murder each other. They don’t HAVE to be on opposite sides of the political spectrum. In a sense, it makes more sense for them to NOT be on opposite sides. The greatest grudges are between former lovers, not strangers.
Augusto Pinochet was a free market rightist, murdering leftists. Rightists can certainly me misbehaved as well. But the definitions of left and right should be based on policy and actions, not the magic of “everyone just believes what I say, despite all evidence”.
Trump represents the people who left the Democratic party with Reagan, because they were racists and fundies who couldn’t stand the hippies. Rather than integrating, they’ve reverted.
Asylum laws, Roe v Wade, the FDA, etc. are all the products of Republican policy and judicial decisions. MAGA is the policy of the Democrats like George Wallace and Strom Thurmond - a very different sort of beast from the hippies but, nevertheless, pro-worker lefties.
