Any advice for me on getting going in Saints Row 2?

SR2 has a few (very few) missions where you are required to use certain weapons or where there are other annoying contstraints–I want to say there’s three or four max.

I’ve started over and I’m kicking butt so far but there’s always new aspects to this game.

I’m stuck at level 4 on Mayhem. I have to cause $500k in damage but I can’t even get close before the cops kill me. I did discover one great trick which is to rack up big combo bonuses by blowing fences down with the RPG. I also survived a rampage (ran out of time) and managed to jack an FBI truck which barely made it back to my hideout. I discovered a glitch as well: you’re not supposed to be able to repair your vehicle while you have a heat score. But I drove right in and pressed E and the vehicle was shiny and new as the game was telling me it couldn’t be fixed!

I did manage to complete a few side missions (Septic Avenger!) so I have a flamethrower, grenades, a septic truck, a food store discount, crib customization discount and increased weapon accuracy. The only problem I find with side missions is that they get incredibly tough after about level 3. Gangs and cops are all over you. I know I could rock with the gangs and take their territories over but I want to do the side missions first to make that easier. I haven’t done many storyline missions at all, just busting out of jail, rescuing Gat and taking the church safehouse.

In an earlier game I discovered that the church safehouse does get fixed up pretty nicely as you progress… the guys bricked in all the holes in the walls, cleaned up all the crap laying around and even restored the big angel statue! This game is amazingly detailed.

I also discovered a guide (on GameFaqs) that allowed me to customize my character until she (previously he) had a stunning resemblance to Summer Glau! But I spent all day looking for the entrance to the mall so I could go to Leather and Lace and was very dismayed to find that the “leather” mini-skirt is actually suede! I’ve seen women in the game wearing shiny black skirts and since I can create my own personal Summer Glau I’d love to know where I can get one for her!

Heli Assault is impossible for me, even with a controller plugged in. The first mission is to kill a little plane. He outflies me with ease. But if I do manage to tag his ass (easy enough as he flies in circles) I have to swoop in to rescue some homies… unfortunately they get mowed down as I’m arriving. I have no idea how I’ll end up doing this mission.

Is there any point to the races other than money and satisfaction? I’ve done a few but they don’t seem to pay off in any special way.

If you were disappointed by GTAIV because of what I’ve heard described as “fun-stifling realism” then you may find Saints Row 2 more appealing- it is decidedly more goofy and arcade-ish.

Personally, I hate the Saints Row series and I thought GTAIV was one of the best sandbox games I’ve ever played.

Missles, missles and if you have time, use more missles. much easier than trying to hit with the chain gun (on xbox 360 anyway)

The way I did it was to use an attack helicopter and drop missiles on fences, outdoor dining areas and the like, where there are lots of little things to blow up in one go.

I believe you get one as part of the main campaign, but there’s also one that spawns on the police station helipad sometimes.

I’ve been doing the mayhem missions by driving around and crashing shit up. Hmm, I have a limo in my garage. That could be fun to mayhem in.

Ah, an attack helicopter would certainly help keep FBI agents off my back… hadn’t thought of the non-linear approach. But I guess destroyed property is destroyed regardless of whether you toss a grenade or a civilian into it or if you blast it with missiles from above. I love this game!

Edit: I tried missiles versus gangsters in Heli Assault and I’m pretty sure I blew my own squad up. The missiles may lock on to the enemies but the blast is addressed “To whom it may concern”.

Anybody know what neighborhood the police station is in? I looked all over the place for it and couldn’t find it.

Are you on the mission where you have to infiltrate the police station? Have you tracked down and stolen the repair van yet?

No I’m still building up extra skills and weapons before taking on the storyline missions. So to complete the mayhem missions I’m going to jack a police helicopter which I’m told can be found on the roof of the police station. But I have no idea where the police station is.

I’ve had fun with SR2 on my PS3. It’s rather disjointed and you run around too damn fast, but it’s fun with lots of variety. That said, I’m replaying GTA IV for about the fourth time now.

I have GTA 4 as well but I find it to be too much screwing around. Like the bank robbery mission. Drive from island to island to pick up your crew. Drive back to where you came from while listening to them bitch at each other constantly. Die in robbery. Lather, rinse, repeat… over and over and over. SR2 has a checkpoint feature so that if you do end up dying in the middle of a long mission you don’t have to start over from the beginning. But TLaTD and Ballad of Gay Tony both look good so I’ll probably end up buying that pretty soon.

As for SR2, wow this game is brutal! I’ll spoiler box it just in case anyone does not want plot details:

(spoiler for Brotherhood missions)

So I manage to steal some nuclear waste and get Worf’s tattoo artist to burn his face off with it. How do they respond? They take one of my homies and drag him behind a big truck until he’s all chewed up and I end up having to shoot the poor bastard. So what do I do? I kidnap Worf’s girlfriend and stuff her in the trunk of her car… which he crushes at a monster truck show! Brutal!

Which side missions give unlimited ammo? I’m constantly running out of bullets, especially SMG and pistol.

Also, how do you change the radio station in a vehicle? The “radio” option on the menu doesn’t seem to do anything.

It’s south of the Ultor skyscraper. IIRC, it’s between the freeway and the inlet.

I gotta say, those missions were the best damn part of the game. The Samedi missions were…somewhat silly. And the forced katana fights in the other set were meh at best.

I’m almost finished the game. I’ve wiped out the Samedi and the Brotherhood and I’m slowly working through the Ronin. I did finally beat that prick with the dual swords. I just had to hit him at exactly the right moment. I never did slice him until the very last hit. I just hip-tossed him like he had been doing to me. He’s not particularly strong, just hard to hit. Getting Gat out of the hospital was an interesting challenge too.

I’m stuck on level 6 of Mayhem and level 6 of Trailblazing. Trailblazing is damn near impossible. I start up in the hills which are packed with traffic for some reason. This would be ideal for racking up bonus time except that the explosions obscure the view and I end up driving off the trail. If I take it slow, I can make it into the city again but the checkpoints are spread way the hell apart and there’s 50-some checkpoints in total.

As for Mayhem, I just can’t do it. I have two APCs to choose from (the Samedi General’s funky truck and an Ultor APC which is slow as molasses) but the cops can bust those up pretty good at five stars. I’ve thought of stashing an APC somewhere and running to it when the opposition gets too insane but I haven’t managed to do that yet. I can’t find an attack helicopter.
A voodoo doll?!?! The bad guy attacks me with a voodoo doll?! However, I loved the cutscene after that: fill the guy full of lead. He gets up. “Oh, for fuck’s sake!” Fill him with lead again. He gets up. Fill him with lead again and then hack his head off. Fun times!

As for the General, it turns out his APC is not impervious to a sudden barrage of RPGs. The trick is not to chase him but to simply unload on him when first confronting him in the mall. Four RPGs kills his truck nicely.
I finally figured out how to change the radio station so I don’t end up getting stuck listening to “Sister Christian” yet again. Although I did find listening to a song I hated during Mayhem missions really helped me destroy stuff!

have you reached the point where your character starts singing along (badly) with the radio?

For the last levels of Mayhem I used nothing but the satchel charges. When you run into an area you run around placing as many as you can on people and especially fences and when you’re ready detonate them all in quick succession. You should be able to get at least a 70 multiplier for that. And just run around blowing things up. Make sure you have at least ten down before you detonate.

No but there was a hilarious one where Pierce started singing along to a tune and he only knew about a third of the words. I also love how the main character will sometimes say to himself “I wish Pierce would quit bitching about Shaundi and just fuck her already!”

I also found out that apparently if I call the right phone number I can bring Carlos back to life as my zombie homie! Apparently he’s corpsified and gross so I don’t really want him following me around but I love that this is an option in the game!

I did try the satchel charge trick but it only works on charges planted within the draw distance. I ran all over the University dropping satchel charges everywhere until I had placed at least 50 of them and then reeled in disappointment as only the last four went off. I love that they stick to people though. It’s fun tossing one at someone who’s sitting at a table and watching them run around frantically with the charge stuck on their back.

I’ve beat all the storyline missions now, including the hidden one that wraps up the first Saints Row. The Ultor mission thread was actually really easy because the game gives you access to all the best gear. It’s hard to argue with an angry man in an APC or assault helicopter. Also having unlimited ultimate shotgun and pistol is very deadly to fools in hallways and on boats and the like.

I loved the ending, especially one minor bit:

The Boss, Pierce and Shaundi are flying back to home base in a helicopter. They pass over a bridge where Johnny Gat is ruthlessly killing cops. Johnny looks up and waves, big shit-eating-grin on his face. He resumes blasting away after waving.

So now I pretty much own the world and just have an entire map full of activities and diversions to look forward to. I figured out how to beat insurance fraud easily: just get on the freeway. Getting hit by semi after semi after semi racks up the points until and unless you get hit so hard you land in another neighborhood which has happened to me.

I still have some hitman lists to do (I don’t think I’ve collected all the lists actually) and I’ve started working on chop shop which should be really easy because apparently most of the wanted cars are in my garage already.

I have a stock APC (Ultor, not police) and a “special” one that I got after completing the pyramid mission. Does anyone know if there’s any real difference between the two?
