Well, the title says it, basically. It’s my son first post-college job, and he’ll be moving to Charlotte in about a month. We’re helping him look at apartments online (initial read: wow they’re inexpensive relative to where we live), and trying to figure out how to narrow them down.
Any neighborhoods you love? (or I guess, don’t love?) He’ll be working near Latta Arcade if that means anything.
I live in Charlotte (but not uptown) and commute to the outskirts for work, so I’m not exactly an expert…but NODA and South End are pretty popular among young people. The light rail system is pretty solid, and some apartment buildings have a stop right out front, which can be great for commuting or going out (and avoiding having to park uptown).
I am a long-time Charlotte resident, but out in the burbs.
Echoing what Ryan1 said, I would look strongly at South End and NoDa. I get that living uptown you can easily walk to work, but these two areas are not much further, with an easy light rail commute. I prefer South End, but a lot of folks prefer NoDa, and I don’t blame them. I think you have a lot more variety in night life and restaurants in these areas. I don’t love the uptown nightlife vibe.
As in any high-density area, be sure to do your research. In all three of these areas, you can go from a nice place to a not-so-nice place in a block or two, and the distinctions are not always apparent at all times of day.
Congrats to your son. Charlotte is a good city with a lot to offer. Since he will be working near the Latta Arcade, make your first meal their a Monte Cristo and the French Quarter restaurant there. It is one of my favorites.
Thanks for all the comments! Anytime you start looking into moving somewhere, the amount of information available can be overwhelming, and often contradictory, so I appreciate you all pointing to specifics.
