My husband and I plan to move to Charlotte in the next few months or so. The reviews I have been looking at are outdated. We have a family of 7 (including us in the count) and are looking to rent a home not buy. I just want updated info on where to rent for cheap but a more suburban atmosphere.
, where not to rent. Public transit. Things to do.where to buy nice, used cars for cheap. Where you can find the most jobs. Any info on Charlotte in general is appreciated.
Well this is going to be moved to another forum but here is advice anyway:
The big industry there is finance/banks. It’s a pretty typical fast growing sunbelt city. It’s pretty close to NC mountains and a little farther from the beaches so those are good vacation spots. The fastest growing area is south Charlotte or the far north suburbs.
Going to move this to IMHO for you.
Public transit is mostly buses but there is one train line that goes from SW charlotte to downtown. Cheaper places to rent might be out in Union county which is east of Charlotte . North charlotte is considered to be the “bad part” of town" with a high crime rate.

Is the suburbs near Charlotte Douglas airport sw?
Airport is west of downtown. It’s a busy airport since it’s a US airways hub. I assume you have to be careful if you live near the airport to avoid the high noise areas.
Most of the newer suburbs are south and east of downtown. (BTW, they call it “uptown” for the dumb reason that the word down is “negative” )
Where will you be working?
You won’t want to live way out to the north (Huntersville) or to the East (Matthews/Weddington) if you’re working downtown.
The biggest up and coming neighborhoods are in South Carolina, for example, Indian Land, S.C.
There is nothing out by the airport.
Traffic in some areas of Charlotte is world-class terrible. I’d sooner look for a new job than have one that involved driving on 77, and the traffic in the University City and Prosperity Heights area is so bad that I changed my work schedule. Traffic on Independence Blvd is awful with all of the people driving in from the “cheap but decent” suburbs to the east.
Public transit is rumored to exist. We used to live in the Steele Creek area, and there were no bus stops within walking distance. When we were in Prosperity Heights, the end of the only bus route in the area was 3/4 mile away.
