Any Celebs missing from WTC?

There are still a lot of people unaccounted for. Anyone heard of any entertainment types? Sorry, just morbid curiosity.

Noone that I’d consider “famous.” But the wife of the US Solicitor General was on one of the planes.

Barbara Olson, wife of the solicitor general, was also a commentator on Foxnews.

The executive producer of Frasier was on one of the planes that hit the WTC.

As was widely reported, the executive producer of Frasier was on one of the planes. Obviously, many business types are gone, including the head of Fred Alger mutual funds, David Alger.

I have read of several near misses. Supposedly Ian Thorpe (the Thorpedo, the Australian swimmer) was headed up to the observation deck (or restaurant, don’t remember which), but had forgotten his camera so he went back to his hotel room just before the first plane hit. I also read that Jesper Parnevik, the golfer, was in a meeting very close by.

I’m safe and sound.

Actually, that was in real bad taste. Sorry.

Apparently, the winner of “Murder in Small Town X” was a NY firefighter and is missing. So I heard…

David Angell, the producer of Frasier, was in one of the planes. Not a household name, but a bigwig in the industry.

Thanks for the responses.

By the way, did anyone else hear that Steve Buscemi… (http://us.imdb.com/Name?Buscemi,+Steve) showed up to help with his old NYC firefighter’s uniform on? I heard this on a radio show the day after & that he was definately not doing this for attention. Did anyone else hear this?

Berry Berenson, widow of Anthony Perkins (“Norman Bates” of “Psycho”) was on one of the planes.

More of a close call…I read that Ian Thorpe (i.e. the Thorpedo), the Australian swimmer who won all those gold medals in the Sydney Olympics, was on his way to the WTC early that morning and planned to go to the observation deck. But then he realized he forgot his camera and went back to his hotel room to retrieve it, and soon thereafter, he found out about the attack.

Does anyone else think this question trivializes this massive tragedy? Just morbid curiosity. - Jill

I’m glad there weren’t any “big” celebrities involved. If there were, we would all be hearing about the “Terrorist Attack That Killed Actor/Comedian/Singer Whoever” all damn day.

Every person that died as a result of the terrorist attack was a celebrity to someone else and more dear to them than anyone that ever came out of Hollywood or stepped on a stage.

You might reflect on that. Or maybe not.

your humble TubaDiva
who feels very sorry for you.

  1. I don’t think you should go so hard on JCThunder, who as much as admitted that the question was trivial relative to the event. Many questions about WWII or the Holocaust trivialize those profound events. JC’s crime is merely posting so soon after the tragedy.

I suspect most of us recently have had one or more questions that we felt guilty about as soon as it occurred to us. This is hardly the most crass question asked in the past week, and it is to be expected on this board that people will ask questions they might be too polite to ask in public.

  1. Otherwise I agree with Tuba.

  2. Doesn’t this really belong in Cafe Society?

The Port Authority had a huge art collection. Part of it was solld at auction in the spring of 1997, but they kept some pretty nice stuff in their headquarters.

I wanted to start a thread about this subject, but was worried about how people might feel.

Ace Bailey, Hockey Hall of Famer, former teammate of Wayne Gretzkey on the Edmonton Oilers. And everyone else, who were all VIP’S to somebody.

I don’t think the OP was in poor taste. In a tragedy this size it’s natural to attempt to make a connection with individual victims. The first question everyone asks is if they knew anyone who was killed. The second is if they had heard of anyone who died. The third, when the tragedy occurs in another country, is to ask how many victims shared your nationality.

Reading The Diary of Anne Frank doesn’t trivialize the Holocaust, it personalizes it. Once you grasp the tragedy in the death of a single individual, you can begin to appreciate the enormity of the deaths of the thousands or millions who died as well.

You know, I heard that Ian Thorpe, the Australian swimmer, had a close call…

Tuba, you do yourself and position no credit with your remark. if you stop and think about it, most people are on this page because of their non-alignment with the niceties of polite society. remember, it’s the Straight Dope, the site that talks about a queen having or not having sex with a horse! the site that talks about worms crawling out of people’s noses! the queen was a celebrity to her family, and cecil himself doesn’t mind taking a poke at the situation! lighten up! and besides, we already have a government (a whole world, actually) already to take potshots at people who think differently from themselves-remember what a forum is, please.

David Angell was the brother of the Arch Bishop of the Roman Catholic Dioses (sp?) of Burlington, VT, Kenneth Angell.
