Any charities that will pickup a donated bed?

I’m moving this weekend and am trying to find a charity that will pick up a queen-sized mattress + bedframe + boxsprings on a Saturday. It’s in really good shape but Goodwill said they don’t accept beds. The Salvation Army only has pickups on weekdays until 5pm (which won’t work due to my job.)

I’m in Glendale, California. Anyone have any ideas? I’d hate to see a good mattress go to waste…Thanks!

Try listing it on your local freecycle website, if there is one. For something in good shape, you’d likely get a quick response.

You might try Amvets. I think they took some large pieces for us after we moved to a smaller place.

No Amvets around here, so I’ll try Freecycle - thanks!

The St. Vincent dePaul Society Thrift stores will also take furniture and appliances that are in good condition.

Aren’t there health department regulations about donating and/or selling used mattresses?

That may be why Goodwill won’t accept it.

About 20 years ago I donated a mattress and boxspring to a charity called H.O.M.E. in Chicago and they came and picked it up. If you’re in the Chicago area you might try the phone book/directory assistance and see if they’re still in business.

I know my parents have donated beds to the Cancer Federation in their area a couple of times. They come by with a truck every so often and do pickups.

Often shelters for victims of domestic violence will be eager to accept furniture items, including beds. The clients tend to be women and children who are starting over with nothing, and when they leave the shelter they need furniture and clothing.

Don’t know where you are, but the local solution in Philadelphia would be our very own kinda-wacky-but-not-at-all-racist and surprisingly efficient/ polite Uhuru Furniture Bazaar. Amazing how they’ve become the first option for a lot of middle and upper class white folks.

“Honey, what should we do with the dresser?”

“Well, snookums, if we call the African Peoples’ Self-Determination Movement they’ll come and pick it up for free…”

Maybe there’s something similar in your neck of the woods?
