What do we do with this bed?

My boyfriend and I moved in together a couple of months ago and, while everything is wonderful and we love living together, we have his old bed in a storage unit at the moment. We don’t want it or need it and we tried to sell it on craigslist but no one is interested in it apparently. It is less than a year old and in perfect condition so we don’t want to throw it out but we aren’t willing to pay to keep it in storage any longer either. Our apartment is too small to store a spare bed so we can’t keep it here and the nearest relatives who might want it for any reason all live out of state.

What the heck should we do with a spare full sized captain’s bed and mattress?

You could donate it to Goodwill or see if any shelters around town need it.

Goodwill won’t take the mattress or boxspring

Well Goodwill and most other similar organizations won’t take beds (low to no resell value and a growing concern over bedbugs).

Apparently there are several bed recyclers which may be available in your area. But they are only in a few states at this time. I think the standard is to simply take them to a dump.

Wow, that sucks. The bed frame and mattress are both in perfect condition and the mattress has been wrapped in plastic for the last 6 months in the packing and moving and storing that happened when we started moving in together. I would hope that someone could get some use out of it but unfortunately being as we are in NYC we don’t own a car or truck and have no way to move it so if we can’t find someone who wants it and is willing to come get it the bed will end up in a dumpster in Brooklyn. :frowning:

You could try to give it away on freecycle or craigslist. Some folks will take anything as long as it’s free.

Yes just put it on the free section, or list it for something nominal, like $10. I’d be surprised if it’s not gone by the weekend.

It took me about a week but I once sold a twin set on CL for $20, exactly what I had paid for it 8 months earlier. No headboard, no brand name, no promises that it was anything close to “like new” condition.

Freecycle. But be sure to make it free, and not ask 5 dollars. Free is a magic word. When my SO and I moved in together, we got rid of two beds and four matresses that way. And add a picture.

We’re giving our old bed to my brother. He lives in another state, but we said, “you have until x date to come and get it if you want it free.” Him and his wife came into town for a weekend, visited with family, and left, trailer filled with box springs and bed frames. Out of town family might want it, and it would give them an excuse to come visit. Give them a try.

We just gave one away to a local organization like Goodwill. Their name escapes me, but they gladly took it. I think they were planning on giving them away to local families and shelters, not selling them. Call a bunch of places similar to Goodwill or the Salvation Army, see what they have to say.

If all else fails, leave it by the side of the road and I assure you it will go to somebody who can use it.

My brother gave a bunch of stuff to the Cleveland Furniture Bank. I googled “new york furniture bank” and found a coupla things…

Furnish a Future
Furniture Sharehouse

My GF and I had the exact same issue when we moved in together. We took the best of the components (my frame, her mattress, my memory foam topper) and created a great Franken-bed for ourselves. The rest went onto Craigslist with the magic word “Free” and was gone in a jiffy.

If you don’t want to give it away, you can use it as living room furniture (if you have enough room). My cousin has a big-ass bed in his living room and people pile onto it to watch movies and such. It’s a little off-beat, but I think that’s why I like it so much. Lots of pillows and that sort of thing…

See if your area has a Freecycle.

They are great for this…

We called both of these organizations and they won’t take mattresses and they won’t pick it up on their own. I think we are going to end up freecycling it.

What the fuck is wrong with you?

Do not dump mattresses on the side of the road. For one, it’s illegal. Even if it wasn’t illegal, you shouldn’t just dump large object on the side of the road for the city or county to have to use tax payer resources to remove. It’s one thing to leave it in front of your own house with a sign on it but not on the side of the road somewhere. There is a frontage road not too far from where I live. I drive down it everyday to get to work. I hate it when assholes dump mattresses or refrigerators off there in the middle of the night. I never imagined that they might have rationalized it to themselves that they might be helping someone.

I would never just drop it off on the side of the road. I might put it out in front of the building in case someone wanted it but it is really, really heavy and I can’t imagine someone being able to just pick it up on their way home. I don’t think that Zsofia meant to just chuck it on the side of the highway in case someone wanted it but to leave it in front of the house or apartment on the street where things are considered up for grabs.

What the hell? **pbbth **is in New York City, not out in the country somewhere. I’ve seen plenty of old mattresses & furniture sitting outside apartment buildings that people want to get rid of.

You’ve seen it plenty of times so that makes it ok? What happens to the ones that no one wants? Do the people who left them take them and drive them to the dump or does the City have to take care of it?
