Born and raised Roman Catholic.
Now ordained to Holy Orders in the Episcopal Church. High Church type…“bells and smells”.
Da missus says, “He’s the reverend, I’m the irreverent…”
Theologically liberal like most ordained folks I know. (There is one God but many paths to him/her.)
Born again Christian, Jesus Christ is my Lord and savior and may his blessings be on you all.
I don’t see why “fundy” is an insult either. I believe in the innerrancy of scripture. The only contradictions and faults are with us humans. If that makes me a “fundamentalist” call me what you will.
Saved and baptized in Burbank, California and now a grateful member of Mogadore Baptist Church, Mogadore Ohio.
My wife is also a recovering Catholic, and we’re expecting our first! Praise God!
Hey, if you want to talk about CS Lewis’ spiritual fathers don’t forget the most famous of them all…JRR Tolkein
Since this has turned into roll call, I’m here as another Episcopalian (former Baptist).
I brought the beer!
Where two or three Episcopals are gathered in His name… there’s a fifth
Jeez, I didn’t know I’d invented some Enigma code.
“Wow, I just found this thread. I think I qualify on all counts, with post count and Biola U. diploma.”
I’m a Christian on all counts, and to prove it, I have a Biola diploma.
“(Actually, I’m not sure there’s anything to brag about with the Biola thing, but, um, it’s there.)”
But really the Biola diploma isn’t anything special at all.
“www.vcfanaheim.com That’s the big, original Vineyard. (That’s supposed to be bragging again, but really it’s where I could get a ride to when I started.)”
Here’s the website of my church. It’s a little famous, but I only started going there because I could get a ride.
“I he’p with the younguns of the high school age.”
I help with the high schoolers.
"BTW, did you know that John Wimber, founder of the Vineyard movement, also founded the Righteous Brothers? Go look it up. He’s listed under “arrangers” on their hits album. "
The founder of the Vineyard movement, interestingly enough, founded the Righteous Brothers. Yes, the singing duo. You can see evidence of it on the back of their CDs.
I wouldn’t call Tolkien one of his spiritual fathers. More a good friend who helped clear up a lot of Lewis’s objections to Christianity. Love Tolkien. I find Charles Williams a bit screwy, though.
since this is sounding more and more like lining up at the Confessional, i better weigh in too.
RC of extreme liberal inclinations here. (argues vehemently in favor of women priests, birth control, abortion, validity on non-Cs getting to “heaven”; pro-gay, pro-Wicca (i’ll read the cards on request), and probably any number of contrarian positions regarding the Pope, the Church, St. Paul, and other matters of stringent dogma.)
and hubby wishes he could be a deacon. (yet supports my Wiccan interests.) go figure.
lachesis
I’ll just set up the fish fry in this corner… free to friends of Cecil, everyone else $5
. (Man, some of the best fried fish I ever had was at the fish frys at my grandma’s Episcopal Church.)
For all of us Episcopalians on the board:
"How many Episcopalians does it take to change a light bulb? (Change, why change? My grandmother gave the church that light bulb!)
The alternative answer is four. One to call the electrician, one to mix the martinis and two to stand around and talk about how much better they liked the old light bulb.
They are just what they sound like. Ham on buns. You get the rolls from the store and put ham on them. The CRC is mighty crazy I tell you! Whhheeeeee!!!
Ahh, ham buns. That’s my childhood, right there. Happy, did you go to college at one of the Big Three? I did. (Hint: my diploma is maroon and gold.)
I’m a Christian, but not a very good one. I don’t usually do things like, “go to chuch.” Silly things like that. (Actually, church and me never agreed with each. I attend bible study instead where I can learn about things interactively, as opposed to sitting there like an automoton. I’m a pretty liberal Christian in general.)
I tend to stay away from Great Debates, because every one of my times “away” from SDMB have been caused by frustration from reading through GD threads on religion. So, now I usually just stay away. (It’s like banging your head against the wall in there sometimes)

MOTHER! I’m a Baha’i too, remember the retreat???
:: meanders in ::
Roman Catholic here, born and raised. 13 years of Catholic schools (kindergarten to high school graduation). I have pretty damn liberal leanings which I don’t talk about with my mother, who’s pretty damn conservative. I’ll be honest (CONFESSION! :D) and say that I’d feel weird with women as priests, but I think it’s because I’m not used to it; I also love Latin Mass and wish they would have at least one mass a Sunday in Latin. I am pro-life (although do not peg me as one who would bomb buildings or kill doctors, that kinda goes against the whole thing, I would think). I’m a staunch believer in non-Catholics reaching heaven, have no idea why some people are against homosexuality, think birth control should be allowed, etc.
Thanks BeagleDave, I knew I could count on you.
Spiritualist sounds odd to me. Not in a bad way…just that is sounds like someone who is very dedicated to the word of God. Like I said I believe and all, I’m just very scattered.
ACK!! No, wait!! That’s not right! Every Lutheran knows the church fills from the rear! “Arrive early to get a good seat in the back”, right…? Sermons are better absorbed the further you get from the pulpit, and besides, the acoustics are better back here…! Waaaaait!
Where do YOU go to church? Must be one of those hippy, new-agey, Left Coast Lutherans. We’re taught that our duty is to sit quiet and still at the back of the church, reverently waiting for the service to conclude. This is our charge, as God’s Frozen People.

:: pauses for a humble & slightly awed silence upon hearing the impression our little congregation made on Saint Polycarp ::
Honestly, my friend, I spent the last several months of last year wishing you & the Mrs. were members of our church. We had a 6-week study of the Creeds & Confessions, the purpose of which was to prepare us for a 6-week study on the Church’s position on sexuality. The purpose of THAT was to prepare us for the denomination-wide vote on a new Statement on Sexuality. (You can probably guess what the main points of contention are.) This vote is a scant three years away, and I’m not sure that’s enough time for any of us to figger out what we think… We could use a clear voice of well-thought-out Christian conscience. God knows I sure as he…ck ain’t it.
Just found the thread – 'nother Christian checking in. Raised non-denominational “low church,” dated-and-married into the Evangelical Covenant church (I don’t think I’ve seen any other Covenanters on the boards, but I could very well have missed them). Covenant is an offshoot of Lutheranism, so I imagine they’re similar in style and all. Hubby and I are fairly liberal, definitely non-fundy, but you’ll meet all types at any Covenant church you go to – the denomination has only a very basic statement of faith. Within our congregation, you will run the gamut of “peripheral” beliefs. Makes for lots of grace and good discussions.
I will definitely be attending the potluck (or “Mixed Blessings”, if you will)! I’ll bring the spritz cookies and some coffee, since Mr. Gazer works at Starbucks.
FWIW, a former Catholic atheist here. I respect everybody’s religious beliefs, and only ask that others respect my absence of belief.
Next month will be my first visit to a church in a couple of years, for my nephew’s first communion. I don’t boycott churches, and I have no problem with going for a wedding or funeral for first communion or the like. To me, that’s just respect for others’ beliefs. Choosing not to go on a general basis is just my own choice.
Happy Posting.
Sweetie, I’m well aware you’re a Baha’i. I just haven’t started thinking of you as a Doper yet!:o
