Just a note of caution, we heard that line about another candidate in 2000, too; that he’d have all kinds of experienced staff to help him be a great President. They turned out to be Nixon-administration warmed-overs like Cheney and Rumsfeld, though.
That isn’t a tiebreaker in this race, as I see it - they’ve both attracted a lot of good people from the highly-successful Bill Clinton administration.
I do think Clinton is overall better prepared for the job, but I’ll happily support Obama if he gets the nod. They would do it in different styles, with different emphases, sure, but I have no concerns over the diligence or reality-connection with either one.
What Republican would the OP suggest is a better choice than either of them? If none, well, there you are.
I support Clinton and find her to be a far superior candidate than Obama - but I will certainly support him if he wins the nomination. I am a Democrat, and have been since the age of 18. Both candidates are fairly close on the issues, and while I worry about his inexperience in DC, there aren’t many Democrat retreads that keep me awake at night. A cabinet with the likes of Biden, Richardson, and Dodd sounds great to me.
I think I should stop reading the election discussion boards out there because I keep seeing people who claim to be lifelong Dems say “If Hillary gets the nom I’ll vote for the GOP candidate.” I hope they’re exaggerating because that’s ridiculous. (I have seen the same said about Obama and Edwards as well.) The candidates all support the issues that the party promotes!
I’m probably going to vote for Clinton. My concernabout an Obama candidacy is that he is going to get swiftboated quickly and harshly as soon as the Republicans have picked a candidate.
There is no new dirt on Hillary and almost everyone in this country has as opinion of Hillary Clinton.
I can see Obama getting the Dukakis/Kerry treatment very easily.
This time 'round, the Dems should get down in the mud and respond in kind – not by swiftboating the Pub nominee, but by swiftboating the Republican Party as such. There’s so much rich, meaty material to work with that there’s no need even to lie.
She’s immune by inoculation. Most of us will have heard it all before; any new slur, some will swallow uncritically, others dismiss uncritically, according to how they already felt about HRC. Swiftboating would work better on Obama because his public image is still not fully developed.
I looked around, and this guy has some interesting and new (well, to me) criticisms of Hillary that make sense. They sum up some of my reservations better than I might. Link
The only person I think would make a more interesting president than Clinton is Ron Paul. I have a feeling that Obama would be a lackluster and forgettable president. If Clinton is elected you will see heads explode. She brings out such fierce hatred, and I never understood exactly why, even though I’ve read and heard people’s reasons.
I would vote for Obama over Huckabee for sure, can’t really say beyond that. If Obama got the nom I would look to a third party or possibly vote Republican, depending on who that is, of course.
I’m not affiliated with any political party, but I’ll vote for whoever gets the nomination that will drive the republicans out of the white house.
I am mystified by people that want the pubbies out of the white house, but would vote foro for a third party candidate if their preferred nomination loses. Remember, it would have been Gore in the white house 8 years ago if Nadar hadn’t sucked away some swing florida votes. so for me, a third party candidate is not a viable winner.
Call me crazy, but I think Hillary/Obama ticket would be a landslide. Or one of these two paired with a real military person like Wesley Clark (we’re dems, we stand for change, and we’ve got the expertise to get out of the damn fool war). m
I dont consider myself party affiliated (well not political parties anyway) but at this point you couldnt get me to vote republican under anything even resembling reasonable or legal means. you are talking about the same people who enabled the bush administration to wholly and completely screw up an entire country because some guy said there were wmds there…and the fact that they expect us to believe that line of crap is insulting.
you can take the republican party out hunting with Cheney for all I care.
Obama because hes not some ancient white guy, hes not a moron, and he cant possibly screw things up worse than the last 8 years have been.
Clinton, why the hate? Bill was a great president and shes not stupid, she has to realize a lot of what went into making him so popular.
I’ve just been following the race over the internet but from what facts I’ve gathered, Obama has run a very dishonest campaign and has lied more times about his campaign and the others than any other Democratic camp. His use of race-baiting or at least his tolerance of it in the first week (before stamping it down) is a bit off-putting to say the least especially since the Clintons didn’t say anything racial.
That Obama has a weaker grasp of the issues compared to Clinton is obvious but that’s not a reason to actively dislike his candidacy. His lack of integrity and his demonstrable hypocrisy, however, is another question. And he has displayed this lack more times than anyone in this campaign and I would imagine people becoming against him if he wins the nomination because of this. He reminds me of GWB a lot, to be honest.
I’m really interested in what parts of the internet you’re looking at the race from, as this is distinctly different from my perception as someone following the race closely in the American media (including mainstream American internet sites).
I find that hallmark of Obama’s campaign image is integrity. Unlike virtually all prior major Black candidates, he has distinctly avoided race-baiting, and the media has been hyper-vigilant to blow up any comment or incident involving race at all. On hypocrisy, it seems to me that most of the other major candidates (perhaps excluding Huckabee) can reasonably be accused of campaigning on issues that have differed from their prior positions, but not Obama (except on the most trivial of issues). Although he can be accused of inexperience, anyone listening to his answers knows he very thoughtful and well versed in the issues.
If the impression that you are getting is that Obama is distinctly weaker than the rest of the field on honesty and integrity, I would strongly suspect that your internet sources are coming in with a strong anti-Obama bias (or perhaps a bias against candidates with African ancestry). If the websites were your basic anti-Democrat websites, I would expect that any dislike of Obama would be overwelmed by raving hatred of Hillary Clinton.
I’d like to hear more where this impression comes from.
It also requirews a credulous audience, already Pavlovianly antipathetic to a candidate or party, just looking for a rationalization. That was easy with the “gay-loving Massachusetts librul” last time, and there’s a built-in anti-Hillary faction which has already shot its wad, but there’s no good opening other than the racial one against Obama.
But there’s plenty of time to come up with something.
I support Obama, and alas, I already foresee more of the closet-Muslim, gun-hating, former-teenage-drug-using, inexperienced-youngster crap we’ve already had a glimpse of. Much more.
I support Obama. I really, really dislike Clinton. Like a previous poster said, I feel very strongly against the idea that the same two families have been running shit since Bush the Elder was first elected. That being said, I do like and respect McCain, while also feeling like the Republicans have let the whole nation down through Bush with this whole 9/11 thing.
If it came down to Clinton/McCain, I would have to seriously ponder about which is worse: the precent of dynastic control in Washington, or the idea of another hawkish Republican in power for four more years.
Nosteratu Giuliani is on the bottom of my list. His serial affairs handled cruely and Kerik absolutely repel me. He loves to talk war too. I have had enough of that crap.
McCain too loves these wars . It has to stop to get any national respect back.
I am not sold a black can win. I hope I am wrong but there are some nasty things being said on the internets. Obama may not be electable in America.
Clinton is a closet conservative. She gives in to the capitalistic powers over and over. The Clintons have joined the ruling class now.
I prefer Edwards but he may be running for VP now.
Huckleby is trying to eliminate himself with his pandering now. He has been successful at that.
