Any Don Martin fans?

At Barnes & Noble today I saw a huge 2 volume slipcased Don Martin collection for $25, marked down from $150!

He was probably my favorite cartoonist in Mad magazine.

zootzootshflop!

Fucking LOVED Don Martin. Somewhere I have a whole notebook of his drawings that I faithfully copied as a child. He was the master of sound effects!

ETA: Beaten by Chefguy. ::shakes fist::

.

I saw the same volume for sale at Fonebone’s Books.

Equal love for Don Martin and Sergio Aragones. Wish I’d seen that collection - I’da snapped it up!

I picked that up a few months ago. Excellent bargain. Trouble was, I had to raise a shelf in my bookcase to fit it.

I picked up a $25 copy of that edition at my Barnes and Noble back in December.
I debated about giving it as a gift, but it was just too good. It’s in my living room.

I’m proud to say I celebrate National Gorilla Suit Day (Jan. 31). Shtoink!

I shall call it… the Klutz Spring!

I have that set, I got it when I worked in a bookstore for something like $20 Australian. One of the best things I own.

I my edition about six months ago. For about $30, IIRC, including S&H.

The biggest problem for me was that there were very few cartoons I hadn’t already seen. I bought MAD religiously during his heyday, and also saw reprints in the various Mad magazine anthologies. But it was great to see them all.

Unfortunately, this book contains only the magazine material, and not the stuff from the Don Martin “solo” paperbacks such as Captain Klutz. Of course, it’s huge as it is!

Was that the plagiarized version written by Fester Bestertester? Make sure you get the one with the introduction by Karbunkle, or else you’re MAD.

Don Martin collection
Sergio Aragones collection

I have the Don Martin collection, but didn’t know about the Aragones one. Off to Amazon …

I do so remember the adventures of Fester & Carbuncle.

44 years ago when I was in Jr. High we had to do a career notebook. Pick something you wanted to do and explain what the job duties are. I wanted to be a cartoonist. I wrote to Don Martin with all kinds of questions and he was very kind and answered all my questions. I kept that letter for decades but it finally disappeared during one of my moves. I have always had a soft spot for him in my heart. A simple kindness like that stays with you your whole life.

DAWK !

Edit: I typed that all caps. If it gets autocorrected again, I shall be miffed.

I’ve got those two volumes. The only disappointment is that they don’t include the cartoons from two (?) paperback books that were all Don Martin originals…
