Must be a cartoonist thing. I bought, for $20 remaindered, Gahan Wilson 50 years of Playboy Cartoons intending it as a gift for my nephew. He never got it.
As noted above, I bought this. I’ve seen it discounted at several stores.
Completely worth it. Of course, it doesn’t include material not in Mad magazine itself, so you don’t get the wonderful things from the Don Martin paperbacks, like “National Gorilla Suit Day”.
Don Martin 3 went “kaflooie!”
I know that Bill Gaines kept ads out of Mad so long as he was publisher, and that was a good thing, but the royal rumble between he and Don Martin - and what came of it - was a real tragedy.
Martin was billed as “Mad’s Maddest Artist”, and I don’t think there was anybody who was a fan back in the day that didn’t know his distinctive style. However, when Mad started publishing paperback collections that included his work without providing him adequate compensation, Martin and Gaines had words, and Martin quit!
What’s more, he not only quit, but took his talents across the street to Cracked! magazine, which could only ever hope to be a pale shadow of Mad - even if they had Don Martin (and Bill Severin!).
