…or other Cub or Boy Scouts. Girl Scouts, too. I’ve noticed occasional references to Scouting on the boards, and wonder how common it is among Dopers as either a youth or adult experience.
I’ve been involved in Scouting since 1975, when my parents signed me up (against my will) for Troop 11 in my little Ohio River hometown. I really resented it at the time, but grew to love it, and earned my Eagle Scout in 1981. Worked five summers as a swimming and boating counselor at the local Scout camp, and still keep in touch with my cabinmates, who are great guys. Earned Wood Badge, joined OA, went to the Northern Wisconsin Natl. Canoe Base and Philmont, and the 1977 and 1985 Natl. Scout Jamborees. Good times. Now I’m a Tiger Cub den leader, having served three other years as a den leader or asst. den leader since my eldest son joined Cub Scouts.
Went through the ranks as a Cub and Boy Scouts up to 1st class, and now wish I had gone on. Both sons are Cubs, one probably won’t go to Boy Scouts, one probably will. I’ve been Bear and Webelos leader and Cub Master next year.
I hope both the boys stick with it, nothing bad can come out of Scouting. The religious and anti-gay agenda is fairly easy to fight, most Scouts wouldn’t give a flying fig if the parents were to shut up, imho.
Heh, What is the first level above Tenderfoot? That is as far as I made it. But I had some fun times as a scout. I still vividly remember a 50 mile canoe trip we took one summer. And that time we had to chase a snake out of the latrine. If I ever need to build a rope bridge, I think I can handle it. Scouting and I parted ways sometime between middle school and high school. I haven’t been able to coerce my offspring into scouting yet but I bring it up every now and then.
Yep, I was a Girl Scout First Class (now known as a Gold Award for some inane reason) which is the Girl Scout equivalent of Eagle Scout. But if you tell anyone, I’ll have to hurt you. I have a reputation to maintain.
I was in Cub Scouts as a kid, but not Boy Scouts. My son has been in it since Tigers, and I’ve been an adult leader helping out for that long. Currently, I’m a Scoutmaster, and my son is working on his Eagle Project (almost there!)
Not me. I was an overachieving cub scout and Webelo, getting every available badge, but I never did much as a scout.
I am, however, an eagle dad. My son got his Eagle and at least 1 palm.
Hey, I think it’s totally cool. I was in scouting up through Cadettes, and I wish I had gone further. You have a fabulous user name for a girl who is a former scout! I love it!
Stupid that they changed the name. I’m sure they are trying to distance themselves from any military overtones. That is so lame. I don’t think the Girl Scouts are what they used to be.
Eagle scout, OA member, as is my brother. (I believe he got more palms than me.) We really enjoyed the camping, especially since this was the height of the “wilderness survival/Eull Gibbons” period. My kids have no interest.
My dad told me once that his dad always wanted to be a scout, but he wasn’t allowed because great grandad refused to join the KKK. The local KKK guy ran both. (And this was north of Pittsburgh.)
My dad was an Eagle.
Cub, Webelo, Boy Scout, Explorer. OA
Made it through life fairly quickly then I found out about girls. I wish I had kept at it. :smack:
When my son was little, I was a Cubmaster, and ran the Webelos den. I had four boys in my den. My son did not go on in scouting, but the other 3 boys all made Eagle.
they invited me to their Eagle court, and I got introduced.
