Any Dopers in the Ontario/Upland/La Verne/Clairemont area?

Just wanted to say hi to my future neighbors, if there is anybody down there. I’ll be moving to Upland next week, because I plan on going to the University of La Verne.
So, what’s the best place to eat? hang out? Where’s the closest library? How much does internet access cost down there? Where can I find a job? (Seriously, if anybody can help me out in the job department, I’ll be eternally grateful. I need one, and I don’t even know where to start looking.)

Well, I don’t live there but I work there, east on Bonita right across the city line with Pomona.

There are plenty of places to eat, especially if you go up D street to Foothill boulevard, east on Arrow to Garey, or further east to Claremont. But you don’t even need to go that far…

Right across D from ULV, next to the Circle K, is a pretty good, inexpensive little mexican place. And a block up is Warehouse Pizza, very popular and busy place. Across from that is a great new pub that serves like 100 kinds of beer and their food comes out in huge portions. And around the corner from the mexican place is a wonderful italian kitchen that you’ll smell before you see.

I’ll check the job board here to see if there are any administrative assistant positions open. What kind of job are you looking for? What are your qualifications and experience?

I’m looking for a job that pays money. =)

My qualifications? Eh…
I can type at about 100 wpm. I know my way around Word and Word Perfect, Netscape, IE.
My experience includes 18 months as a dishwasher, six months as a store clerk, and another month working the cash register at K-Mart. I haven’t worked the past 2 years, because my parents wanted me to focus on keeping a high GPA.
sigh
With this amazing resume, I’m almost guarenteed a job, huh?

Thanks for the restaurant suggestions. It looks like after I get some money, I’m going to have to try all those places. (Yay! Something to look forward to)

A guy I work with teaches at the University of La Verne. He teaches an advanced auditing class and his name is Ken Brown.

I don’t live in the area, but my folks & brother live in Rancho Cucamonga; I go out there once or twice a year to visit.

As bughunter pointed out, there are lots of places along Foothill, some of them quite good. Also lots of places near I-10, especially by Montclair Plaza and Ontario Mills.

For internet access, if you’re talking broadband, check out http://www.dslreports.com – you just enter your zip code or phone number, and it’ll give you a list of DSL providers, with prices. I’m not too sure about Upland, but I know that there’s no real broadband in Cucamonga just yet.

Also check with the local cable company for cable modem service; it’s usually priced the same or less than DSL, and can be faster if the cable company knows what it’s doing.

Route 66–variously known in the area as Foothill, Huntington, Alosta, etc.-- passes through LaVerne; and there are lots of restaurants along the Route.
I would have recommended the Derby East in Glendora (just 10 minutes or so to the west), but it’s gone, dammitall…but if you want some good Italian, Spaghetti Eddie’s in Glendora is pretty good.
Claremont is a nice place to walk around in, lots of trees, and the Village has some nice little shops.
If a restaurant gig doesn’t work out, the colleges and universities are usually looking for clerk typists and similar employees, if you want an office job.

Warehouse pizza! A definte place to hit.

I don’t know how someone can mention spagetti eddie’s without mentioning Vince’s Spagetti (on alosta in glendora, or holt blvd in Pomona). In-N-Out Burger of course. The HAT (on Alosta just east of the university) for a killer pastrami dip, and maybe some wet fries.

I’m drawing a blank where the library is at the moment, but there’s a church on every corner.

Is the prime rib place still across from the university, or did that turn into a sizzler? I can’t remember.

Now in Upland there is a place called Molly’s Souper off of Euclid and C street. It’s great for soups and sandwiches, and sitting outside on a nice day.

Oh guess I should clarify I don’t live there anymore, but grew up in the area and visit often enough to still call the valley home.

Mmmmm…the Hat…

And I just remembered another Route 66/Foothill restaurant in Claremont: Sorrento’s. Half the menu is Italian food; the other half is Middle Eastern.
