I have been downloading their song “Unsung” over and over, and every copy has a section in the middle where the guitars completely drop out and it’s just the snare drum banging away. I didn’t think that happened in the song; it didn’t sound that way when I saw the video. I’m starting to wonder if maybe the video had a different version of the song than the album. It just doesn’t seem sensible that there are this many bad copies of the song floating around on the Internet.

“Unsung” does have a brief section like you are describing, but it doesn’t last too long and soon picks back up with guitars and all. the drum part is kinda like a bridge or something (im no music guy, so sorry if i use the wrong terminoligy)
“Meantime” is a great album, so if you like “Unsung”, go get the whole work. it has a couple of tracks that are awsome! The first 3, as i recall, and “Better” (track 7?) is unbelievable! “Meantime” is the only disc i have so far. been meaning to check out some of theri other stuff, but i am easily sidetracked musicly. (currently in some kind of weird alterna-country groove)
also, if you like Helmet, try some Tool if you haven’t already.

Some songs I just can’t seem to get a decent copy of. “Remedy” by the Black Crowes always seems to have the main solo missing. Matthew Sweet’s “Girlfriend” is typically missing the second guitar.
If “Unsung” does have that guitar-less section, I don’t mind, because it’s an awesome song either way. I just wonder why the version on the video and on the tape I have is different.
Snoopy, I can’t remember if the song is that way or not. It’s been a while, and I don’t remember it being that way.
Either way though, the Helmet album to get is ‘Strap It On’. Much better record than ‘Meantime’.
I haven’t listened to Helmet in about 10 years, but Meantime was a great album. Damn, so many good bands, so little time to listen to them all I suppose.
okay, i did it when i got home. good disc to listen to while working on the jeep, because it is full of angst. rolled the creaper over my ponytail and it got hung up in the wheels and i ended up losing about an inch…
anyway, “Unsung” has a section (bridge?) like you describe about 2:34 into the song, where the drums are very prominent and the guitar takes the back burner (seems to be playing the same chord for 8 beats, then changing chords for another 8 beats [remember- i don’t know too much about music, so bear with me]) and goes on for about 30-odd seconds. i could see how you can totally miss the guitar chords depending on the recording you have.
check the time and see if we are talking about the same section of the song. around 2:30 to 3:00.

Meantime is far and away their best album. ‘Betty’ the next album is pretty good as well. Unfortunately they went down hill after that.
