While the Lady Lex (or the Blue Ghost, if you prefer) won out in my calculations for this weekend, the contender was the Nimitiz Museum in Fredricksburg.
Have any of y’all done that museum? Is it woth a trip to Fredricksburg? Is there a good place to stay? Should I make it a Sunday extension of an Austin visit (I’m out of Houston) or make a dedicated weekend trip?
Y’alls’ comments are appreciated - thanks in advance.
I’ve been there- depending on the time of the year, it can be a very nice ride to Fredericksburg. In the spring, when the wildflowers are in bloom, would be a great time. Or even in December, when all the Christmas lights and decor are up. But in the summertime. there’s not much to see on the road, and walking down the main street in June, July or August is pretty miserable. It definitely takes all the fun out of window shopping.
As for the museum itself… it’s well worth seeing, but not worth a lengthy trip in and of itself. If you were planning to be in or around Fredericksburg, by all means, go see it! But if you drive a long way just (or even primarily) to see the Nimitz museum, you’ll be disappointed.
Well… if you already live in Texas, then walking up and down the main street isn’t much worse than walking up and down ANY street in August.
The Lex is impressive, and takes a couple of days to really “do” properly. The Nimitz Museum, on the other hand, can be toured, for the most part, in half a day. Yeah, I’d recommend it as a day trip, but unless you’re really a major WWII buff, I wouldn’t drive clear to Fredericksburg just for that.
Although I was there a couple Memorial Days ago, and they had a squad of reenactors storm a pillbox, using vintage equipment. Never seen a flamethrower used up close before. Hell, that was worth driving out there to SEE.
