I’m sure this has been discussed a million times over, so please feel free to point me to the relevant thread discussions, but is there any way to add a “Thanks”, or “Like” button on here?
I’m still in my “3 month SDMB honeymoon period”, so maybe I’m a little over-excited, but more and more I’m seeing posts that are incredibly informative / relevant / hilarious - and without littering up the thread with… “quote” {brianh333} man, I’m going to be laughing about that for weeks “/quote”, is there another way to acknowledge to someone, “your post made me think / laugh”, without cluttering up the thread? Maybe something I’m missing?
There is…not a lot of love for Facebook-style functionality around here. Go take a look at the currently-ongoing “we’ve added share buttons” thread in this forum if you want a taste of it.
And yeah, nothing wrong with just posting “This made me laugh.” Personally I always appreciate hearing that someone liked one of my posts or whatever. (Because at heart I’m a narcissist with low self-esteem, but let’s not quibble.)
But if I stumble into a thread that’s been going on and on for days on end, and I notice that you posted this ‘last Thursday’, I’m not going to click “post” “quote MsWhatsit” {brianh333} hey, I have nothing relevant to contribute, just wanted to give you a ‘shout-out’ because I found this post (from 5 days ago) funny / informative".
I find myself thinking that over, and over, and over again. It’d be kind of cool to just be able to click a button that says “I read this, and it made me chuckle”.
I’m not bitching at all - this just came to mind, and thought I’d get you guys’ opinion on it (and I think you guys have answered my question).
I see the appeal, and I think I agree. I’ve read posts that I particularly liked, that impressed or informed or amused me, and it’d be nice to show the poster some love and appreciation without cluttering up the thread with contentless posts. But on the other hand, it would make the boards more cluttered. (Is there a way we could set a user option to hide the Likes if we didn’t want to see them?)
Anyway, here’s one thread where this was discussed before: Why No “Like” Button? As you can see, not everyone’s crazy about the idea.
You could just send a private message to the poster.
Drag - select the text you like, copy, click the poster’s user name, select “send a pm” from the dropdown menu, paste the text, add “That made me laugh!! Keep it up!”, click send.
I know, cumbersome. But until V-Bulletin adds a functionality I don’t think it has, it may be the best you can get.
