So I’ve just finished Fable 2 and LOVED IT! Enjoyed the first one too, probably the only two video games I have every actually finished.
I had a partner of 8 years who was video game nuts (as in owned every console and updated his computer regularly to keep up with graphics- kind of like being into cars but more expensive!) and he suggest WoW, but that’s not for me.
So suggestions? I like the fact you can wander all over the place, don’t have time constraints and don’t have to restart levels when you die. I don’t mind the story line, it can be vampires or FBI agents for all I care. I didn’t mind GTA but it was a bit over the top with violence for me.
Am I just going to have to wait for fingers crossed Fable 3?
If you like sand box games where you get to walk around and generally do what you want but are not so keen on violence you could try The Bully which I really liked, like GTA but set in a rough prep school.
Oblivion is okay, but you’ll need to investigate some of the mods to make it a more enjoyable game (the levelling system is not well thought out, everything levels with you so you never really get more powerful relative to the enemies you’re facing).
I highly recommend Morrowind which was the precursor to Oblivion, that game sucked me in something chronic.
You could give Fallout 3 a go, that’s like a post-apocalyptic Oblivion but apparently better (not tried it so don’t know if it’s any good).
Beyond Good and Evil. Although more linear than Fable, it has an amazing storyline and a similiar view and control scheme. It also has a quirky sense of humor that I find akin to Psychonauts but a bit more held back.
Not as good as it cuts out many of the RPG elements and focuses on the combat, but Darkened Sky might also interest you. The entire game revolves around a magic system based on those trippy Skittles commercials of the 1990’s.
Note: Neither of these games are as good as Fable, but they are both quite fun.
I second this. Oblivion is good, but it’s no Morrowind. Morrowind is one of the few games out there that truly merits a rating of 5 out of 5 dirty dishes. (The dirty dishes scale rates how much the game will cause you to neglect chores, errands, and real life in general)
I’d disagree with this, I found Fable and Fable 2 both to be pretty good games, but nothing spectacular. Beyond Good and Evil, I found, was a great game. Just my two yen.
Definiltey agree with this. Oblivion was ok, but the story was crap and the leveling system was really lame, I found the whole game to be ridiculously easy. You definitely need mods to make Oblivion worthwhile. Morrowind overall was a vastly superior game.
For Fallout 3, it’s excellent. They fixed most of the bad issues the Oblivion engine had, specifically the leveling and the enemies leveling with you (which made Oblivion ridiculously easy, you could beat the game without leveling up at all) and threw in some of the flare and humor previous Fallout games had, though I would note it’s some and not all of said flare/humor. Still, overall a damn good game.
If you want to choose between Morrowind and Fallout 3 I’d suggest you simply go with what setting you like better: fantasy versus post-apocolyptic (from a 1960’s projection of what our future would be like)
