Any interest in a Fantasy Baseball roto league with auction draft?

Auctions are only effective if every owner is present and active. I’d strongly ask anyone thinking of joining who doesn’t intend on being at the draft to please not join. Even one absent owner at the draft really screws it up.

Live auctions don’t even take THAT long. Regular drafts take what, 90 minutes or so? Auctions clock in at around 2 hours.

If you still have any spots available I’d be interested in getting involved. I have a very, very long history with fantasy sports, though admittedly I’m a year or so behind on MLB… I’d catch up pretty quick. I’m certain I wouldn’t have any trouble missing a live draft if I was given enough notice beforehand. Let me know! Thanks.

Bumping this with permission from Mhendo to attempt to recruit a couple of people for my own auction league. The most important consideration for prospective participants is being free for many hours on Sunday 3/27 for when our draft takes place. We have been doing online auctions long before fantasy sites have added software to do them efficiently, and prefer our slower, more trash talking filled approach.

The league features roto scoring, weekly transactions, limited keepers (new players get extra draft money to compensate), and the traditional 5/5 stats plus total bases. For more info just pm me or visit our website Dove Hunting Baseball. Right now we are at 10 members for this season, and I’d like to get to at least 12, but am willing to have a few more than that too.

Any interest? Should someone just start a league and open it up?

I am still interested, does someone want to just set up the league?

I’d have to draft on a weekend, but I can handle one more league

OK, i’ve set up a league. The league is called SDMB Auction League (sorry, no pithy title), and the stable URL for the league is:

http://baseball.fantasysports.yahoo.com/league/sdmbauction

If you want to join, please let me know either by posting in this thread, sending me a PM, or sending an email to the address in my profile, and i’ll send you the password so that you can sign up. You’ll need a Yahoo account to participate.

The settings for the league are listed below. For the most part, i left a pretty standard roster format and a pretty standard set of stats in place, and we’ll need to talk about how we want to tweak it. Please feel free to weigh in with opinions on draft day and time, roster format (how many players, what ratios, etc.) and on what hitting and pitching stats we should use.

At the moment, it’s set up as an all-MLB league, but if we don’t get enough teams, we can switch to an AL-only or NL-only league. We also need to think about things like limits of trades and acquisitions, and rules for stuff like waivers. It’s currently set up for Commissioner to approve trades, but i’m happy to make it a League vote, if that’s what people want.

8x10? Huh?

What?

8x10. You have 8 hitting categories and 10 pitching categories. That’s insane.

I know what you meant.

My “What?” was a sort of shorthand for “Why don’t you read the goddamn comments in my previous post?”

I just basically left a bunch of settings as they were, added a couple including K/BB and K/9, and made very clear that these categories are all open for discussion. I had absolutely no intention of leaving them as they were. When i said in my previous post:

i was not simply typing for the sake of using my fingers.

I got my first two Yahoo! roto teams this year earlier this week, one snake draft, one auction. I did my first auction last year and I don’t remember it taking this long.

My snake draft took 90 minutes. My auction took hours and hours. Towards the end, only one player had any money left to bid(it wasn’t me.) I queued up some players with about seven slots to fill and left early.

I think you should have an RF, LF, and CF for positions, instead of generic OF. I think you should only use one of WHIP, K/BB and K/9. You don’t need all three. Batting and pitching absolutely need to be balanced.

I definitely agree with this.

I agree that we don’t need all three. My leaning would be towards WHIP. I think we need a stat that measures strikeouts, and i’m not sure whether there’s much difference over the long run between choosing K or K/9.

I’d lean towards WHIP as well. W, CG, SHO, SV, Holds, K, ERA, WHIP makes the most sense to me.

I’d be interested, but we need to pare these categories down - maximum 6 per offense/pitching. SHO and CG are league-breaking - Halladay’s owner pretty much instantly wins these two each year, can punt Wins and focus on Saves, Holds and the ratios with closers and top-tier middle relievers. I don’t mind Holds as a category, but if it’s a small league, it sucks all auction value out of the closers.

For hitting, I think Net SB is awesome - I believe this is Yahoo’s first year with that category. I’m not a big fan of doubling up on production - R, HR and RBI do enough of that already. So Hits and Walks seem to be weird categories to do. I’d vote for the traditional R, HR, RBI and (Net) SB - and add OBP and SLG. It still doubles up HR again in SLG - but there are plenty of solid SLG guys who aren’t going to bash a ton of homers.

But that’s just my two cents.

I agree with much of what you say Munch, especially about SHO/CG and Halladay. I think you’re right about Holds too, especially in an auction league. I’m getting ready for work right now, but i’ll come back later to add my 2c.

Any takers? I might be able to rustle up a few people from one of my regular leagues.

I’ve only had one person so far. I’m hoping that some of the others who have posted in this thread will come back and express an interest.

I am surprised I am the only person to sign up after like 10 people said they’d be interested!
