Fantasy football early general discussion

This can be the thread where we discuss general fantasy football topics before we all spread out into our seperate FF threads for each league. You can discuss anything here - from your regular league, to who should be the #1 pick this year, to proposing leagues and scoring systems, whatever.

I usually run a lot of NFL-related SDMB threads and leagues and this year will be no different. I plan to continue our invite only/high participation SDMB All-Pro league (last year’s thread) for the third year. Reliable players from last year (I think we had 10 or 11 regular participants) are automatically invited - if we have slots left open I’ll post about it.

We had the auction league for 8 of us last year (thread) which was a lot of fun. The draft was on the slow side but worked well enough. Having learned from the experience, I’m going to break the draft responsibilities up into multiple roles and ask for volunteers to help run it. I was hoping to grow the league a bit this year beyond our 8, so you guys are welcome to join us.

There’s the salary cap league (thread) which was a little different - each player has a dollar value associated with their performance and you fill all your positions with a set amount of salary space trying to get the best value. If your player rises in value, you get to keep him for the low price, so finding sleepers is critical. Since multiple people can own the same players you can have as many players in this one as you want.

Then there are of course the pick 'em and survival leagues (thread). We had 3 pick 'em leagues - straight up, confidence, and spread. I’ll be doing the same again this year.

And if that’s not enough, I plan to give some new stuff a try if there’s interest. We often post the betting lines on games we discuss in the weekly threads, and some people will discuss which bets they like - I figure we can turn that into a competition. We’ll give participants X number of betting units in fictional money, agree on which lines/book to use, and all make our fictional bets and keep track of our totals. We may be able to use wagerline.com for that purpose - they essentially do that very thing… but I’m not sure if they have private league type setups or how that works. Has anyone ever used the service?

I also wanted to try a new kind of FF league of some sort that’s different and challenging in some way. For example - an extreme depth league with 16-20 teams where every team has a significant amount of starting slots so that you might be facing the decision of whether to start Tampa Bay’s third down back or Houston’s 4th receiver in your flex spot. Not sure if we can get 16-20 people interested in that idea though. Or perhaps an efficiency league where you subtract points for every pass/rush attempt/etc thereby rewarding the best per-play performance from players rather than the raw numbers. Or maybe a zero bench league where if you want to switch what starter you have on your roster, you’ll have to cut your current one. I’m open to ideas.

So let’s get this ball rolling. Any FF topic is fair game.

I’m back in for the auction league. Hopefully I can keep myself from spending like a sailor on the first three or four players that pop up.

I’d also be down for either the huge league or the no bench teams. Just one of them, though. And I think I’d prefer the no bench league.

I think you got my LaDanian-Peyton punch confused with yours.

Okay, so there’s drunken sailor, and then there’s man-with-two-days-left-to-live…

Damn, was that an effective tactic to make you the bad guy all season long.

I’m in for whatever I can get the attention span together for… I had a rough year last year across the board and I need to get back THE TASTE OF VICTORY. So I’ll be a-watchin’ this thread.

I know! I had a punchers’ chance with that team all season long. The rule to close free agency the first week didn’t help out at all.

I have been pretty excited about fantasy football season lately, thanks for the thread SenorBeef.

This year I hope to avoid having a one man team. Don’t get me wrong, I know that I only saw the playoffs because of Brady but I think I am going to go with well-rounded this season. Well rounded and running backs that are not broken down. Stupid Rudi Johnson with his stupid broken everything.

I like the sound of a new monster-sized league. It should work out pretty well if everyone stays active so count me in on that one.

I have my doubts that we can find 16-20 active players, especially in a league where you’d have to do some research to be effective, but it sounds interesting to me because I end up putting in the research anyway and there’d be a big reward for finding gems.

I had a list somewhere of whacky FF league ideas and I don’t remember what I did with it.

My FF upgrade this year is an ipod touch and a sports bar with wifi access - I don’t have to wait till I get home to check my FF scores and taunt you all with my inevitable victories. I hope yahoo releases an FF app for the iphone/ipod touch with live updates and such, but even just using the web interface should be pretty good.

I’m back for the All-Pro, Pick-Em, and Survivor leagues. I’m not only intending to repeat, I’m intending to improve.

If you guys start, I’ll be in…grinding it out every week. Depending on some other leagues that I may or may not join I might be interested in joining the Auction league. I’ve never done an auction and I’d like to try a public league before being taken to the woodshed by Dopers.

Any websites have public auction leagues?

I’ve got such a love/hate relationship with fantasy football. Stupid game drives me crazy.

I would most likely play in a large league, if there’s room. I’m in a league right now that’s a long-term league where roster turnover from year to year is limited, so it’d be fun to play in one where I stand a chance of actually rooting for a few different players from time to time.

I’m in for everything. It’s really perverse how much I enjoy this stuff. I’ve tried to satiate myself with an NBA and MLB fantasy team but it just isn’t like the real thing.

I doubt there are any decent public/free ones on the interwebs. Auction drafts tend to be live - I didn’t even find any software for doing them on the internet. They’re more work and more… intimate… sort of… than regular drafts.

Don’t worry about lack of experience - none of us knew what we were doing last year and it ended up turning out pretty good. If you look at our thread from last year linked in the OP you can see some of our discussion about it.
I forgot that I had another idea - a yardage pool. You pick a QB, WR, RB and every week and their passing, receiving, and rushing yards respectively get added to your score. You can only use each player once per year. I played in a league last year with running backs/rushing yardage only and it was fun - you had to look at the matchups down the road and figure out the best time to use every player.

Any interest?

Hello all! It’s my favorite time of year, and boy have I missed these threads.

Two things, first. One, I’m EsotericEnigma. My subscription expired and I decided to go with a new name, all my own.

Two, I checked last year’s thread (a great read in the beginning) and found this amazingly prophetic quote. I am a fortune teller. I can see the future. Do not doubt me.

Do not doubt me!

I’m back to defend my hard-fought and well…er, not so well earned championship. THE CHAMP IS IN THE HOUSE!

I’d also love to do the auction league this year (as I accidentally missed the draft last year), and I’m of course up for all the Pick 'em leagues. I have to defend my Pick 'em crown! I’m going to unify the belts this year and sweep them all!

Btw, SenorBeef, ESPN is currently doing auction leagues on their site, both mock drafts and live. Their interface is excellent, and it’s a blast to do their mock drafts. Something to check out, for sure!

Oh, the betting game with the fake money is something I’m definitely in, even if there’s only two or three of us. And the no bench league sounds very fun. I’m not sure yet if I would be down for the extremely deep league, though. I don’t know if I’d enjoy spending so much time thinking about a player that won’t ever see the field.

Brees is my top QB this year (after Manning and Brady, of course)., but I think it will be the Saints’ D that shows dramatic improvement this year. Jon Vilma was being wasted in the Jets’ 3-4, IMHO, and I think he’ll have a huge (read: Defensive POTY contender) impact on that team.

I will not draft Brady in Round 1. The dropoff for record-breaking QBs is too consistent a pattern to ignore.

SB, I’d like to get into the auction league if you’ve got an opening. Always wanted to try one of those.

When is the draft looking like it’s going to happen for the All Pro league?

Interesting, I’ll have to check that out. How does everyone feel about moving that league to ESPN this year?

I rather like using yahoo, and paying the $10 gets you live scoring for all your leagues so I’d like to keep them all on yahoo. Plus we all know everyone has an account there, etc. Is ESPN free? Do you pay for extra features like live scoring?

(My personal bias will lean me towards any site that comes up with an iphone/ipod touch app with a slick interface).

Some people have been e-mailing me to get the league renewed and functional, so I did that. During the process it wants me to set a draft date/time. I set it at Friday, August 28th at 9pm eastern for now, but we can change that if we need to.

The rules were imported from last year’s rules which IMO were pretty good. I was thinking about tweaking individual return yardage again because I don’t feel like a player’s special teams contributions were weighted enough. But feel free to make rules and scoring system suggestions. And if the date I mentioned above isn’t good for you, please speak up.

Everyone from last year was pretty active except for Retrovertigo who seemed to be too busy to keep up. Everyone else is invited back but please only accept it if you’re able and willing to keep up the same degree of participation as you did last year. I’d like to consider that league the premier SDMB league.

I’m in. Thanks for the invite.

I’m in.
