Any interest in Garry's Mod and Synergy Mod for Half Life 2?

Recently, Toaster and yours truly have started a small Hamachi server, on which we run Synergy and Garry’s Mod. We have decided to extend the invitation to join to our fellow 'Dopers. If anyone is interested in joining up, or just giving it a try, send either of us a message, or pop me an email at DocFinnGmod@gmail.com.

I’ll try to have the server running on at least most Saturdays, and once we are all set up, volunteers can host the server while I’m not around.

Culex (Toaster) and Doc Finn (me!) will be the server moderators until we are more organized.

Basic things you’ll need:

Steam

Half-Life 2, or preferably, The Orange Box

Garry’s Mod 10

Synergy

The Hamachi VPN client
Also, for the purposes of Game Modes in Gmod, and mods for Sandbox, a slew of third-party mods that I’ll post in an announcement thread if folks are interested.

Quick addendum: I’ll probably post the required addons and maps for the server in a folder at Filefront or somesuch, so as to bring folk up to speed even sooner.

Hey, neat. I have Garry’s Mod, and I love getting back into it now and then. I may just have to give this a try. :smiley: What addons do you have? The essentials IMHO are Wiremod and the PHX3 model pack; those two alone add tremendous versatility.

I have not yet updated to PHX3. Still using the old V2 pack. Got wiremod though. I’ll probably update to 3 before I do anything. Beyond those, I mostly have a series of random tools and models that I found handy at the time.

Do you have the Fin Tool? That one is invaluable for building things like realistic airplanes and helicopters – no need to hack things together with thrusters, just designate some reasonably flat model as a lift surface, push it through the air, and off you go.

Just wanted to say, basically, that:

-We do have tons of addons and stuff for Gmod. It’d be a lot of downloading, but at least we’re picky. No nude skins (sorry). We have a good variety of maps, game modes that are not terrible (we regularly pick out new ones and test them between us, usually to horrific results), some models & stools that are highly useful for construction. We’re happy, as already demonstrated, to pick up others that Dopers enjoy too.

-We do have tons of maps for Synergy. Many of them are terrible, granted, but there’s at least HL2, Ep1, Ep2, and LC, along with Minerva, Riot Act, and a scant few others that were not bugged into unplayability instantly. It might be hoped for that a newcomer is not against console codes to allow noclipping, or skipping a busted map in a sequence, because nothing is bug-free! We only use them when forced to (HL2’s ending stages for instance dislike multiple players), or when being silly, though.

-Yabba my icing.

-Personally I don’t fall in for the deathmatch stuff, so that so far we haven’t done anything truly to that end. But it’s still available - we have some maps that are good for DMing. Not that 2 people makes DMs fun I think? I dunno.

-I think we’d both be happy to give anyone a fair shake, to join us for a ‘trial’ essentially, to see if personal compatibility is an issue. We do use voice chat, but text is fine too. We have indeed used voice chat in other games with other Dopers, such as in City of Heroes/Villains, so we know how the drill is. If things work out, great.

-We are both a bit nervous that we will scare off any others. Mostly, we don’t take things too seriously. Or much at all. If say, Doc there is building something cool and I am on the server, he puts a dumpster over me that I can’t noclip through without getting set on fire, losing my weapons, and being dumped at a spawn point, so I know to stay away and not fling things around and break everything. And due to playing amongst ourselves for so long we naturally have a few in-jokes. Now, those who enjoy Gmod typically of are a similar sort, I think, but still we’re bound to be a bit nervous. Just FYI.
