Gary's Mod for HL2 = good times

Been playing with it all night: basically just a bunch of tools and features that expose HL2’s physics model. Sounds simple, but’s incredibly powerful, and really demonstrates how versatile the engine is, and how well done the physics simulation is (even incredibly insane stuff like matresses with car wheels “feel” right, even though I’ve never seen a matress with working wheels. If anything, it really makes me wonder why Valve didn’t include lots more crazy physics elements in the game. In like, 20 seconds, you can put together all sorts of crazy contraptions with pullies, wheels, thrusters, and so on. Watermelon catapults, breakdancing ragdolls, armorplate your vehicles and so on. Pimp my ride.

The mod is also popular for ragdoll/face/object posing, leading to all sorts of goofy art challenges. Of course, there are the usual sexual position shots, but most people are sick of them by now and they aren’t as common.

Anyway, you get the mod here:

And you can see the forums where people post shots of what they’ve done here:

I have been playing that mod too, and there is nothing funner than flying around in a contraption made of roped together bodies with ballons stuck too them.

i downloaded it, but can not get it to work. it does not show up in my menu. do you extract the files from the folders and place them in the mods steam folder or just stick the whole folder in there?

It was just a self extractor for me. It created a directory called “Sourcemods” at E:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps and that’s where all the files went under a subfolder called Garry’s mod. It then showed up after restarting steam.

I should mention that the mod has multiplayer, but most of the servers are both full AND listen servers, which means some idiot trying to run a server and play at the same time. It’s very crash prone, but if you can get someone on who isn’t a dick, it’s still pretty sweet racing each other to build a crazy car contraption or catapult.

Well, there went any hope I had of studying this weekend.

Holy crap.

Coolest. Thing. Ever.

I have a wheeled G-man with a couple of burning oxygen tanks flying around the map. I’ve only been playing with it for about 5 minutes.

Can you play this online with other people? I really, really want to play with this online with other people!
Ahhhh! You can!

But it tends to get laggy really quick.

The problem with the online play is severalfold:

  1. Listen servers suck. But almost every server out there is a listen server. Hence, the mad lag and constant disconnections. They need dedicated servers!

  2. There are lot of things people can do that will crash the server, and you aren’t prevented from doing any of them. Too many objects can crash the server after awhile, but there’s no inbuilt limit. You just have to trust people not to do it, which isn’t very safe. There’s a reason why most of the servers are password protected.

  3. Just generally not a lot of polish on the MP. I mean, all the player models are the G-Man with a gravity gun sitcking out of his pants where his penis should be. Insane, I’ll grant you, but it belies the lack of time that’s gone into MP.

That said, the SP is fun enough on its own for now. It’s especially neat that you can build physics contraptions and then save the game and pass around the save files so other people can try. I especially like the shurler: railgun type setups with two paralel rows of wheels stuck to the ground that launch objects placed in between the rows (have to be EXACTLY the right size though).

Have you tried out the pulley system? Mad fun! I also like playing through the actual game levels with their AI intact and screwing with people. Creating manhacks and then linking them together with ropes is especially fun as they tug on each other and drag each other all over the place. You can get some great three stooges moments.

Try this: in an AI enabled map (just start any real map with “map mapname” in the console) create a manhack by shooting some object with the enemy launcher. Attach a 1000 thruster to the manhack with the thruster gun. Shoot the thruster to start it, then shoot the object the manhack is attached to with the remover gun to free it. Amazingly, the little guy, even though pathetically and amusingly thrown off course constantly, will actually still try to hunt you down.

Actually, scratch the manhack thing: I meant a scanner. Use a scanner with a thruster. You can do this without all the worry of the whole object delete thing, and with AI, if you start that map where you first walk out into the city 17 plaza, where there are lots of scanners to harrass.

I’m going to declare the MP way too buggy to be tried. While it’s fun enough that people seem to be putting up servers left and right, they also seem to crash left and right.

Meanwhile in SP:

Heh:

Pretty good rendition of this:

Apos, that’s just awesome. I can’t imagine how long it must have taken to pose all those guys just right.

I don’t have HL2, but I like seeing the pictures of just fooling around.

well i just got the mod to work . one question. how do you spawn NPCs like alyx, g-man etc.? in version 4 there was some buttons on the wall to spawn players in this version there is only buttons for the shapes.

Hit q: it’s bound to a HUGE menu of spawnable objects, characters, and so on.
