Any movies who's sequels make the previous film's action irrelevent?

Riddick wrecked the two characters from Pitch Black. That kind of annoyed me. It didn’t totally make the first movie pointless, but still took a good chip out of the poignancy for me. (If Pitch Black could be called “poignant” by any stretch of the imagination.)

Riddick decides he has a soul after all, he’s not so badass, and he can be altruistic enough, to help rescue a couple innocent people after all. So there are only three survivors, Riddick, a holy man, and a child. Next movie, the holy man gets killed right away (after putting a bounty on Riddick’s head, thanks pal!) and the runaway kid has turned into some kind of sexy, female, Mad Max Beyond the Thunderdome girl.

Thanks for reminding me, folks, that I should stay out of Highlander threads.

That was the problem with the Borg in Star Trek too. Nobody seemed to get the idea that the protagonists should never have been the beasties, they were simply a seemingly unstoppable force, something for our otherwise boring humans to fight against and to drag out the best or worst of them. That after all is what makes drama, drama.

Edit; Reminded myself, much as I love the film, doesn’t Star Trek III, the Search for Spock take some of the sting out of The Wrath of Khan?

 Aliens from the &*%@# Planet Zeist!!!

And worse yet Elizabeth Hurley was only in the first 5 minutes!

My sentiments exactly. I always wished Cameron would come back and in the first 4 minutes of a sequel, make it clear that Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection were just vivid dreams that Ripley had. I thought both films sucked donkey balls. Only James Cameron should have ever been allowed to make an Aliens sequel.

Hey now. You on shaky ground there. No messin’ with Star Trek III.

I kind of disagree with this. They did get rid of the Elizabeth Hurley character at the begining to get Austin back into his swinging ways but later when he starts to fall for Heather Grahm’s character he exhibits a lot of the character development from the first movie.

I was thinking Ocean’s 11 and 12. The fun of 11 was that they got away with it, but in 12 we find out that they didn’t.

When I saw how many posts there were in the thread I knew it would be too late to mention Alien3 but I am compelled to mention it again because of my deep, deep hatred of that crappy movie that ruined one of my favorite funtime movies.
