Any Non U.S. Dopers Want To Help Out A U.S. 2nd-Grader?

The Littlest Briston’s 2nd-grade class is doing a project, tied in with the upcoming Olympic games. Each student has been assigned a country, and they’ll do a basic report on them and make a poster showing a couple of the main details of the country. Then they’ll follow along during the games and keep a running total of their country’s medals.

So I thought I’d see if I could surprise her and her class with a couple of pictures of folks from various countries holding up signs sending greetings to each student and their class.

If anyone wants to help out, send me an e-mail at sirblah42@yahoo.com and I’ll let you know all the details. Please let me know which country you’re from, so I can let you know which student is assigned there.

I’ve received a ton of questions from people, so I’m going to try and cover the most common ones here:

FAQ:

What countries do you need? With 16 kids in the class, there have been 16 countries assigned. They are Australia, Canada, China, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Russia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. However, even if you’re not from one of those countries, you’re still more than welcome to participate! Send an e-mail and I’ll let you know the particulars.

What should be in the picture? Whatever you like, really – if there’s something scenic nearby that you can get in the shot, then terrific. If not, that’s ok too – the important thing is getting something in the picture sending greetings to the student (and the entire class as well, if you like).

Can I use an old picture? Sure, several of the submissions I’ve received are of older pictures that people have photoshopped to add in a greeting to the class. That’s perfectly fine! What I’m not looking for is just scenic pictures from your country without any greeting. I appreciate people helping, but the key thing here is getting a message of greeting to the kids.

How long do we have? The kid’s projects are due in by January 30th, so if people could send them by the 24th, that will give me enough time to sort everything.

Will we get to see the project when it’s done? Yes, certainly! All the pictures will be in an Imgur folder which the teacher can use to show the class. Once the project is complete, I’ll be sharing the folder with everyone (and hopefully there will be a few “thank you!” pics from the class as well).

What’s a ‘2nd-Grader’? A kid, about 7-8 years old, in their third year year of formal education (kindergarten, 1st grade, 2nd grade).

Are you their teacher? No, my daughter is in this class – I’m just a dad with too much time on his hands who thought this would be a nice surprise for the kids.

Didn’t this post used to have all the details in it? Yes, but some were concerned about the level of detail in there, so I’ve removed all information about the school and the kids. When someone e-mails me about participating, then I let them know all the details.

Thanks so much to everyone who has already helped out!

I’m usually willing to jump for such projects but the Cayman Islands don’t send many athletes to the Winter Games. We do have one competitor, Dow Travers, in Men’s slalom and giant slalom.

At least this will bump the thread.

What a cool idea!

Singapore’s not in the list, so I can’t help - but love what you’re doing!

…I’ll do New Zealand: give me a couple of days to figure out a shot!

What, nobody wants Angola ? :frowning:

We have a winter of sorts but it does not start until May. I hope the kids in Mrs. Viggiano’s 2nd grade class have fun.

If nobody else has claimed it, I’ll do Great Britain. Give me a day or so.

This is cool. Sadly, I can’t help at all; I’m in Minnesota. But here’s hoping that there’s lots of people out there who can.

But, but, what about New Mexico and Hawaii??

I have sent you an email. Hope it’s of some use.

That it was – the pic was exactly the kind of thing I was hoping for, and the letter was a very nice touch. I’m sure the kids are going to love it – thanks a ton!

By the by, I responded to your e-mail, but it kicked back as undeliverable.

I’ll see if I can send something, maybe I can convince my premade pals to get a group pic. Seilah right? Like Sheila with a dizzy h?

I’ll see if I can knock something up for Australia.

Any other Aussies want to do it as well, go for your life, no reason why the kid can’t get more than 1 is there?

Yup, Seilah – pronounced “SAY-la”. Which has caused more than a little confusion, since The Littlest Briston is “SHAY-la”.

Absolutely not – the more pics, the better!

I was thinking… (I know, I know, stop that). Would an old pic work? I think I have one from the first day I saw snow.

Absolutely – since we’re working with pictures you already have (as opposed to taking ones specifically for this project), I’ve been asking people to edit the photo to add in the text. If you can do it, that’s great – if you can’t but you would like me to do it, I’m more than happy to do so (I’m just not editing people’s photos without their permission). Either way you want to handle it is just fine by me. Thanks!

What countries do you still need? I have Twitter and Facebook friends from all those countries, especially (what might be the harder ones of ) Russia, Poland, Norway, Finland and China.

If you still need several, would you mind if I posted your OP to Facebook?

I’m organizing a pic from Canada. It’ll probably just be the usual stuff, someone dying outside a hospital after a moose bite.

Let’s do it this way – all the info is currently in the OP, but I’m going to edit it to remove the specific details (I personally don’t have any problem with it, but other parents might, I don’t want to ruffle feathers). So what I’ve done is put together a quick-and-dirty web page with all the necessary details, and if anyone wants to help out, they can e-mail me for the details.

So, if you want to share this link, by all means, I’d very much appreciate it!

I can do Italy, let me see if my brick of a laptop can still run Photoshop.

I sent a couple of photos from a recent trip to Paris. Hope this helps.
