Any Of You Taking Siestas At Work?

Being that it’s supposed to be beneficial to your output, I mean?

Thanks

Q

Someone at work suggested this a year or so ago on the in-house message board. He thought he should be allowed to nap, on the clock! Needless to say, it didn’t happen, but the nerve of some people!! We have (had - I’m now retired) flex hours, so if you want a 30-minute nap in the middle of the day, you just stay 30 minutes later. I see no problem with that. I’ve had coworkers who napped over lunch - one went so far as to keep a hunk of foam under his desk and sleep on that - he curled up in the knee hole of the desk.

Personally, I’m not a napper. A little sleep leaves me wanting more, so unless I can get a few hours, I won’t nod off.

I envy people who can nap and wake up feeling refreshed. I can’t - I fall into a deep sleep and wake up feeling groggy and out of sorts if I try to siesta during the day.

Besides I am a painting contractor, and it would be pretty odd to go sit in my truck or lie down on a client’s couch for a midday nap. I did have an employee who took a daily 30-minute meditation break. He went off in a corner, sat cross-legged and…meditated. I thought that was fine although clients and other people on the job thought it a little weird.

Sometimes when I just can’t hold my eyes open I put my head on my desk and take a nap during my lunch break.

I so wish that I could, even if it meant a longer work day. I’m a designer and sit at a computer all day and get freak’n tired as hell at about 1:00. I’d LOVE to take a 20 or 30 minute nap, then get back to work.

If I sleep during the day I wake up feeling sick, but beyond that, I would definitely be terminated for sleeping on the clock.

I’ve been known to take a 10-15 minute head-on-my-desk nap at work. Just a few times ever, though. The phone will wake me up if it needs answering, and I put a note on my door that says “I’m here, just knock” so if anyone needs anything I’m still available. On days I’ve done that I’ve just stayed a little later than usual at the end of the day.

Same here. As a teacher, I get 25 minutes per day of **not-being-responsible **and gladly forego snarfing a Lean Cuisine in favor of just floating for awhile. I can’t say I actually nap–I just grab a few lights-off, door-locked, head-on-desk moments of quiet. I always set a timer though, in case I really drift off.

If i nap for more than a half hour or so I usually end up getting a very bad headache. At my job we get an hour for lunch (if you’re working a 8 hour shift like 9-6), off the clock. The only rule is that you can’t drink alcohol.

Here’s a poll from two weeks ago. By my tally, something over a third of 119 Dopers are willing and able at least hypothetically to take a nap during the work day, while 40% either want to but can’t or would never consider doing so in the first place.

Luckily, my new office environment includes a napping room (well, the landlord probably had other intentions) with comfy couches. So I sometimes find that 10 minutes there after lunch refreshes me for the rest of the day.

I’ll take a 20 minute “power nap” during lunch once in awhile. One of my pain meds sometimes doesn’t play well with Xanax and it’s either nap or fall over asleep at 2pm.

Air traffic controller here.

What?
