I had a job interview in South Florida last week (Palm Beach Gardens, to be exact) and it went really well. The company is having me come back next week for a second interview, and I have a feeling they’re going to offer me the job. :happy dances:
Anyway, in order to work there I’ll have to move to Palm Beach County, which is about four hours southeast of where I live now. I figure that out of over 18,000 registered members there have to be at least a few Dopers who live in the area and can tell me about it.
So what’s it like in Palm Beach? Is there anything I should know about the area? Details, please!
I live right across the street from Palm Beach Gardens. (Kinda wish they’d annex my neighborhood, as the address alone would add like 10 grand to my little hovel’s value.)
Palm Beach County is a pretty cool place to be. Lots of things to do, and lots of weird stuff seems to happen. Depending on your tastes, you can catch a ballet at the Kravis Center or mosey downtown to watch the street crime.
It does tend to be expensive here however. Simply living in PBC means that you’re obviously rich and must pay more for everything. Even if you’re a ditch-digger, you’re gonna pay 10-15 cents more per gallon of gas than neighboring counties. And if you live east of I-95, then you’ll pay quite a bit more for storm insurance, since apparently hurricanes never stray west of major highways.
All in all though, I like it here. Feel free to ask any questions.
Thanks for the tip, Tixenfleaz. A few of the places I was checking out are east of I-95. Actually, I’ll probably have to get something in a surrounding area anyway – most of the apartments in Palm Beach Gardens are way too expensive for me.
As for everything else, it sounds like a pretty good place to live. I’m in a very rural county right now and there’s not too much to do around here besides watch the cows graze. Sounds like I’ll have a lot to check out in South Florida.
My wife and I have lived in South Florida for almost two years now. Besides it being a “drama-magnet” kind of place (that Elian thing, botched Pres. elections, Terrorists living down the street, and now Anthrax), its kinda cool. I live in Coral Springs which is North of Fort Lauderdale and South of Boca Raton.
The temp is always (even in January) 70F - 92F and it rains almost everyday (but usually only for a few minutes). Miami is cool and you’re not far from the Keys.
It can be big fun. The people can be rude though and there’s just too damn many of them. Driving can take some getting used to.
George Carlin said, “Florida is the 80 state. That’s the average age, the average temperature, and the average IQ.” Sometimes I totally agree.
A south Florida DopeFest is definately needed. let me know when you get into town.
I don’t live there, but my driver’s license says I reside on Worth Avenue in Palm Beach, and driver’s licenses never lie, do they?
I was actually there for about a year in 1999-2000, while working on a case. I absolutely adored it - though admittedly, living in a hotel 1/2 block from the beach, while on an expense account, probably influenced me.
A few things:
Palm Beach and Broward counties are the sixth and seventh boroughs of New York City. I swear, it is easier to find New York newspapers than Miami papers;
All the nuts do roll down to Florida; Tixenfleaz, by mentioning the Kravis Center, about covered high culture. An apt description of the area is “strip mall, McDonalds, strip joint. Strip mall, Burger King, strip joint.”
You must, must, must go to Cap’n Charlie’s Reef Grill. The best damn seafood I have ever tasted, and pretty cheap, too.
