The beach bum life is calling me. After five years of drudgery at a large NYC law firm, it suddenly struck me that one is allowed to work less than 12 hours a day, six days a week. Further, one is allowed to live somewhere where the air is (allegedly) clean, the winters are warm, and the beaches generally lack medical wastes.
Accordingly, I’m packing it in and moving to West Palm Beach. I’m going to do some contract attorney work and try my hand at writing.
While I’m going to miss the NYC Dopers (one Doperette in particular), I’m looking forward to meeting and greeting a new crop of tanned and relaxed Dopers in South Florida.
You’ll certainly be missed by the New York kids! Some nerve, by the way, soliciting for Flordia Dopers to welcome you without even proposing a time for the NYC Dopers to send you off.
West Palm! Keen! I love that area! I know you’ll have success at whatever you decide to do, and I hope you make it back to the Big Apple on occasion to make us all jealous of the beachy life.
I live just a few minutes south of West Palm. Let me know when you’re hitting town, and I’ll buy you a celebratory drink. I really want to explore this work less than 12 hour days and 6 day weeks idea that you mention. It sounds radical.
Basically, about $11.60 northwest from you on the Ronald Reagan Turnpike (only $9.60 if you exit at Yeehaw Junction to drive an hour on the back roads to skip that $2.00 flat toll below Rte. 192).
And yes, I have interests other than the theme parks (I’ve ‘discovered’ some great places to go snorkeling and diving).
Ronald Reagan Turnpike??? Never heard the Florida Turnpike called that. Hmmm.
Perhaps your arrival will raise the mean intelligence there. You may have better working hours at your free-lance job, but Fighting Ignorance will chew up the remaining moments of your day. Fighting Ignorance with a Tan, though.
I normally don’t, although I will admit to inadvertantly calling it the “Ronald Reagan Memorial Turnpike”. Purely Freudian: several of the 'personally named" roads around here (Central Florida) are ‘Memorials’ - e.g., “Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway” aka Rte. 192.
