I went there, Maastricht, but the ones I saw that I would like for her were way above my budget, as I plan to get her a few other gifts. Plus, if there’s someone here, I’m sure she’d appreciate one made by one of our Doper friends - even though the ones shown say they are hand-made.

If you can find someone to sew it up, a good dirndl pattern can be found on Folkwear’s pattern website , in the ‘Old Europe’ section, for about $20. Folkwear’s patterns are of high quality - a lot of professionals use them. Looking at the design and the fitting, I think it would require a moderately skilled sewer to fit it properly. Sadly, that’s not me. I hope you find someone, but maybe this can be a start.

I doubt very much that seamstresses of tailors frequent the Dope. Making clothing is an exacting and time consuming pursuit, and in recent years at least, it holds little appeal to the intellectually curious.
As for tailors - who are by definition professional - I haven’t met one with a decent command of the English language in 25 years.
I will seriously question your sources for the above bolded comment.
I am a theatrical seamstress, and I find that patterning, draping, and sewing are all quite interesting and mentally stimulating pursuits. I don’t know if you’re thinking about people who do mainly alterations (which, while not perhaps the most stimulating job, can still be a challenge), or if you’ve actually befriended any seamstresses or tailors, but our craft requires thought and effort, and good seamstresses/tailors can be quite intellectually involved.
Would you snipe at an architect and say that “in recent years at least, architecture and drafting holds little appeal to the intellectually curious?”
As for the OP - Quasi, I love reading your posts, and I wish you and Dondra all the best, but I’m in grad school right now (ahhh!!! Finals!!!), so I haven’t the time to take on additional projects at the moment. Good luck with your search!
I think I can help. I am an amateur costume maker but I’ve been told that I should go pro, I have been making costumes for both my son and I and some times Czarcasm for close to 30 years for SCA events and also for SF and Anime conventions. So if I can make a costume with just a picture to go by I know I can use a pattern.
Cool! I was going to go that link CythaOgg recommended and ask them if someone they know might do it for me, but I’d rather give it to one of my Doper buds if you’re agreeable!

I think you just called a ton of people here idiots without a comprehensive understanding of the English language. You need to hang out with more people who sew – they’re a pretty intelligent bunch, and I know there are quite a few people who sew very well here. Sewing is actually a pursuit which is perfect for people who are intellectually curious. It’s very challenging and requires a lot of knowledge, skill and craft to do even remotely well. It’s like carpentry, but you can fold up your finished product and put it in a drawer.
I’m glad you found someone, Quasimodem! I would have loved to have offered, but I’m backed up with projects until the end of summer already. Of course, all this fabric manipulation has made my brain shrink and killed my intellectual curiosity, so there’s only the remotest chance that I am typing in intelligible English at this point. We probably would have had to have set up a system where I tapped my hoof twice for yes and once for no. This would have been difficult, given the distance involved. 
Quasimodem, I’m glad I could be of help, even in a small way! I’m glad you found someone to make it for you too - please, can you post pictures of it when it’s done? I’m sure folks here would love to see how it turned out. Best to you and Dondra - I don’t speak up much on the board, but I have been following your story, and you’re both in my thoughts.

The nick is from a character in Terry Pratchett’s *Discworld *comedy/fantasy novels. She’s also known as Granny or Nanny Ogg - I chose it because I like her attitude towards life, which is expansive and fun-loving. She doesn’t do anything by half!

I want to apologize to anyone in the needle trades who felt slighted by my opinion that you were intellectually incurious. All I have to go on is my experience with so-called custom alteration specialists, who typically alternated between talking me out of what I wanted and getting it horribly wrong. Even discounting the almost always present language barrier, none of them ever impressed me as particularly on the ball. Maybe I should have coughed up and patronized higher-end establishments.
Apology completely accepted and understood - I have met quite a few alterations people who I am pretty sure were not pillars of *any *sort of thought, let alone intellectuals, so I can understand where you’re coming from. That said, I’ve met supremely unintelligent people (or at least really good imitations) in just about every profession under the sun. Try not to judge all by the lowest common denominator! 
It will be interesting to see and hear what Sue Son will play next in the Semi-Finals of Britain’s Got Talent show. Perhaps ‘Classical Gas’ which, I think, will suit her style of playing on the electric violin.
