I’m wondering is there a social networking site that I could use just to create a network for my family and closest friends. What I want is to be able to allow about two dozen people to link with each other but for no one else to be able to view their pages nor access the network. Do any of the popular SN sites allow you to do this?

I’m looking for a site that won’t prompt me or other members of the group to become friends with others though, can you turn that function off in facebook?
Prompt how? Facebook does have an area off to the side of the homepage that suggests other people you may know (usually based on your friends’ friends, your school & graduating year, and your employer) but it’s definitely not intrusive. Do you not want to even see that other people exist? If everyone in your network only is friends with each other and doesn’t list school or work info, you may not have any suggestions.
Try Google Groups. Perhaps they’ve changed their format, but at least the last I looked the format was principally one of creating a club/group sort of thing with a set member list. You could share a gallery, links, calendar, etc.
