Any Starcraft 2 players here?

I’m thinking of getting it but I want to see what people who have played it have to say. Is it worth it? Will I be spending countless hours playing it again like SC1?

If you played ladder SC1 or lots of custom maps, you’ll like SC2 since that stuff is improved. If you only played the single player missions, you probably won’t like SC2 'cause the single-player is weaker and only playing a single race is boring.

Whether or not SC2 is the optimum game for your gaming nature, that’s hard to say.

Yup. I’m traditionally a single-player-only guy and I burnt out on SC2 after only a couple of days of dicking around with it. For me, it was a waste of money - I really think I’m pretty much through with straight resource-harvesting RTS games. But YMMV and all that.

As noted above, SC2 is a multiplayer game. The single player campaign is not particularly difficult, and the storyline is definitely lacking in comparison to the first.

But oh, the multiplayer is fantastic. The matchmaking system on battle.net is much improved over SC1, and provides a constantly evolving challenge. The custom maps available also provide a slew of other games utilizing the SC2 engine that range from DotA clones to incorporating elements of Bejeweled into RTS micro skills.

I actually liked the single-player campaign. They did a good enough job on the story, the writing and voice-acting were actually decent, and it was nice to be able to pick which mission to do when (which actually has some impact on the dialog options, in addition to the gameplay effects). It’s also not quite entirely one race: There are four Protoss missions, and you can eventually get a gizmo that lets you mind-control enemy Zerg.

I was going to say, in terms of gameplay, the SC2 single player experience is a LOT better than SC1’s.

In terms of narrative, I’d say the difference isn’t huge.

How is the computer AI in SC2 in skirmish mode?

Considerably better than it was in 1. There’s about 6 difficulty settings, and it doesn’t even cheat until the highest one. It still doesn’t learn new tactics, though, so if you find something that works against it, it’ll keep on working.

It’s a pretty great game in terms of gameplay, but in terms of story it should be viewed as the first of a trilogy. While what there is is well told and well acted, it’s always made evident that this is just the start of the story. Which is OK in and of itself, but Blizzard’s habitual refusal to give release dates for the next games is beginning to annoy me. (Especially since it’s already nearly two years since the original came out and the two second expansions will be running on the same engine, which was never a graphical powerhouse in the first place.)

The campaign was fairly fun, with some nice variations on the different missions. Storyline is pretty terrible imo. What really makes this game great is the multiplayer, though.
I have spent countless hours combating other players, and it’s equally fun each time. Also really stressful though, I get soo worked up playing SC2 multiplayer.

Well, one caveat on “better multiplayer.” That’s true only if you play ladder. My friend and I got SCII after playing WCIII and looking forward to the custom map scene and they essentially ruined the custom game lobby. It’s a self-fulfilling system that only allows popular maps to be played. So if you want to play custom maps (and don’t forget, DOTA started as a custom map, they’re nowhere near bad games a lot of the time), SCII isn’t the best choice.

Thanks for the feedback guys! Sounds like fun but I think I’m going to get addicted :frowning: Will use my willpower to not buy for now…
