Here’s the deal. My favorite show was replaced locally with Mike Savage. But it’s still carried on the Fargo station, which I get in my car but not in my house.
Now, the site offers free live streaming, but no archiving. I would assume it’s legal since it’s offered free anyway. What I’d like to do is record it over the cable modem, and need suggestions on how best to do this.
Also, I’d like a device that would record it automatically, like a VCR timer or TiVo.
Anything like that exist or am I SOL if I’m not in my car?
There is definitely an app out there that will do what you want, on schedule too, as my father (in the US) uses it to record the BBC. Can’t remember what it’s called, unfortunately. ‘Record Everything’ or something. Try this page.
I myself have regularly download RealAudio from the Web by using HiDownload Lite, but it’s for contiguous, rather than streaming, files.
To grab the RealAudio stream though, you need first to download the tiny ‘primer’ file on the initial link, usually with an .ra extension. Save it to your hard drive, and use notepad to open it up and find the link inside. Paste that into HiDownload and away you go.
“Total Recorder” is the name of one of the big recording programs that can usually record anything played through your computer’s speakers. I don’t know if it has an automatic timer, or if there’s any way to make it start other than manually…? I have not ever tried to use it.
Some of the Creative/Soundblaster soundcards can to the same thing. If you have Win98 or ME, the Creative recorder input setting to do this called “what you hear”. In 2K/XP it’s called the “system mixer”.
