I’m honestly expecting Asuka to show up at Summerslam tonight and be moved up to the main roster undefeated. As I’ve said, her carrying that undefeated streak all the way to Wrestlemania in almost 8 months would be huge, and someone defeating her there would be mega-huge. The story lines of women trying and failing and trying to be the one to face her at WM could potentially be total awesomesauce.
The show was excellent from top to bottom. I think the fact that there are only 5 matches per show helps a lot.
That being said, the ending of the women’s match was such a dumb decision. Asuka gained nothing from the win and now I’ve lost all (kayfabe) respect for Ember Moon. Why should I care about her next match? She’s obviously not championship material so who gives a shit. On the flip side, Ember would have gained SO so much from that win. I’m hoping that they just send her to the main roster undefeated because the current line of thinking is that Asuka will eventually lose to the Mae Young winner (Saine probably) which, again, buries Ember Moon (and pretty much the rest of the women’s roster too).
They needed Asuka to lose and be sent to the main roster, then Ember comes the next night to challenge anyone who wants to face her. Have her run through the other women (Ruby, The Aussies, Nikki) and eventually face the Mae Young winner and lose to her or whatever.
If this storyline progresses more and Ember ends up looking good then I’ll eat my words, but as of now all that match did was bury the women’s roster and continue the most boring championship run ever.
It was a great show, the smaller number of matches gave them a lot of time to tell their stories and I was very happy with it.
I dunno, if Asuka goes on to the main roster undefeated and plows through everyone there, then it tells a story. If Asuka stays in NXT, then they’ve just shot themselves in the junk, because there are no other women positioned to be a reasonable threat to her championship.
If she moves on, then we have the prospect of a tournament to fill the vacant championship, which will give more of the women exposure. Too many of them have just disappeared while the concentrated on what, 5 or 6 of them? I get that, but with Asuka gone, it opens up the field for a few of the not-quite-there’s to put out the effort to show that they belong on TV and are willing to put it all out there like every single person on last night’s show did. And while I would expect that Ember would win, it isn’t a given, and she isn’t the unbeatable champion going forward.
You must not have been watching Hogan during his run. I can watch Asuka beat everyone all day and all night. The only thing I’d like is if she were more heelish - start taking more shortcuts “because the opponents aren’t worthy of her best”. Have her arrogance be her vulnerability.
He had a fairly competitive match with John Cena. If he was being buried, he’d have lost in 2-3 minutes in as embarrassing a fashion as Jinder’s last match with Orton.
I don’t know how you can be considered to be being buried by having a match with John Cena at Summerslam and actually getting in a lot of offense.
If we’re going to be talking about buring anyone, it’s going to be Rusev.
Non-coicidentally, I heard that earlier this weekend (prior to Sunday) that Rusev asked for his release. No further confirmation from that, but Sunday’s result certainly didn’t help put that rumor down in my mind…
If Rusev asked for his release, I would expect Lana did as well, since they’re married.
He should go to New Japan and be a monster there, although I have no idea what Lana could do other than be his valet.
I have no idea how we go from Mahal being utterly buried in a match with Orton to coming back to beat Nakamura, unless that was some kind of Vincian test to see if he would complain about the match with Orton.
All the rumors about Naomi not dropping her title and the toy company wouldn’t have the version of her belt ready for xmas may just point to them giving it back to her when the toy company is ready with it. In the mean time, isn’t this Natalya’s first run with one of the modern Women’s championships? If so, it makes sense to give her a run (even though I’m not a fan) when pretty much everyone else has had runs and people like Alexa and Sasha have had multiples.
Yeah, Rusev got it even worse than Corbin. But the only way Corbin was going to come out of this strong would have been with a mostly-clean win. Instead, he’s the next Rusev, and if he’s lucky, in 3-5 years he’ll get another serious look. And Mahal is getting McMahon Heel Booking 101 - he (almost) never lets heel champions look strong, even in winning. And after One-armed Orton nearly beat all 3, and Cena all-but-beat Mahal on Smackdown, McMahon doesn’t realize that he made Nakamura look weak in comparison, despite his clean win over Cena a few weeks prior. Hell, he showed more grit and resilience on Smackdown against Cena than against the champion. That is pure back-asswards booking.
Wait, what? They were going to keep the title on Naomi because they were making a glow belt for the kids, now they can’t so they took it off of her? Is that what you’re saying?
Also I believe you’re right about Nattie. I know for a fact that she hasn’t been a title holder since I’ve been watching wrestling again, which is going on 6 years now? I think?
(I should probably know since I only started watching again cuz of Ms. Cups, so it’s pretty much as long as we’ve been together)
I liked Naomi a lot with the title, but Nattie has been very very consistent and deserves it as well.
Well, I may be off-base and missed something (happens), but there was talk about how they wanted to keep the belt on her for a while and they were in the works with their toy company to make a version of her glow belt, but they were having problems and wouldn’t be able to get it to market for a while yet, possibly not even by christmas.
If that is indeed the case, then it certainly makes sense to get the belt off of her for a bit, give Natty her title run, then get it back on Naomi about the time they’re ready to introduce the glow belt in stores.
Not like WWE hasn’t put the belt on people right about the time their movies come out or other PR work gives them mainstream exposure, right?
Disagree. My crazy wrestling theory of the day: they want to give Cena a push so they can have him win the Smackdown - er, uh, WWE heavyweight title before Ric Flair’s health gets to the point where he can’t be there to “pass the torch” when Cena breaks his world titles record.
Cena doesn’t need a torch passed to him, he needs to pass the torch. I don’t know if he says it because it is the right thing to say, or because it is true, but I get the feeling he would like to pass the torch. But it isn’t his decision.
Had to watch the past weekend’s events piecemeal while Eclipse watching and running out of data on my phone.
Brooklyn Takeover: Johnny Gargano makes me feel like I’m five (not in a weird way) because he’s such a great face. He looks like he’s getting thrashed, but he always gets out of trouble looking Spider-Man cool. Stupid ending to the match, but La Sombra is getting a resurgence. I loved the nonstop brutality that was the Alesiter Black/Hideo Itami match and I hope they continue the feud. Alexander Wolfe was light years better this match than before. He was the star of the match. Asuka vs Ember Moon rocked, but Asuka is clearly a level above the rest of the roster. Drew MacEnGalloway looked the best I’ve ever seen him. I was thrilled to see reDDragon reunited, and ADAM COLE BAYBAY! He is the greatest brat heel ever.
Faves of SS: Brock vs Roman vs Joe vs Braun (so much epic destruction), AJ Styles vs KO (KO is such a great heel and AJ is just superhuman), Rollins & Ambrose vs Cesaro & Sheamus (the Shieldsters have such great chemistry with each other), Bliss vs Banks
Ehhs: Bray vs Finn (could have been so much better), Cena vs Corbin (didn’t dislike it, but wasn’t wild about it either), Natty vs Naomi (the Hart finisher has been escaped soooooo many times before but not on SS?), Jinder vs Nakamura (weak sauce)
