Cena or the Rock? Will Cena finally turn heel? I think Cena wins this year, not sure about a turn. Not really interested in this match.
Lesner or HHH? Lesnar would be better, but I’m sure HHH wants his loss back.
Does CM Punk have any chance of breaking the streak? Every year I think, “This is the year.” It never is, so I never predict it.
Will the Shield continue its evil “justice,” or will Orton, Sheamus, and Show prevail? Heel turn in the works here? Orton screws over the Justice League, giving the Shield a big win.
Fandango or Y2J? Jericho should win, making Fandango look good in the process, but I’m afraid Fandango may win.
Ryback or Mark Henry? Mark Henry should crush Ryback, but Ryback is supposedly the future and Mark Henry is near the end of his career.
Cena wins, turns heel, not much to go on here except that Rock owes him one and Cena will never draw flies without a heel turn.
Undertaker wins, Punk will be gone for a while.
Swagger wins. People will pay to see Del Rio try to beat him again, they won’t pay to see Swagger again.
Fandango loses I hope. Y2J has been laying down for everyone lately, so he’s owed something, and Fandango was a flop initially until he started the feud with Jericho. No idea where they’re going with this though, I’d rather not see either of them again.
Shield wins because of internal problems with Orton, Seamus and Show. That sets up a lot of future matches. But I’m not sure who that actually sets up the win for.
Ryback wins. I think Mark Henry was brought back just to make a match with him.
Hell No beats the Ziggler and Little E. There’s no future for that ad hoc tag team, and Ziggler may be cashing in his Money in the Bank tonight.
No idea what’s happening with HHH and Lesnar. Another pair I don’t care if I ever see again.
This’ll be my first Wrestlemania since Hulk Hogan squashed Yokozuna at Caesar’s Palace (which has gone down in infamy, but I thought it was awesome when I was 10), and it sounds like it’s going to be a good one. My predictions;
Rock v. Cena - Cena wins clean, Rock shakes his hand after the match in an homage to Rock/Hogan 2002.
CM Punk v. Undertaker - Undertaker wins clean in a surprise reversal just as Punk is about to get a three-count. Punk is flabbergasted and tries to hit 'Taker over the head with the urn - he no-sells it and then continues to beat on Punk until security pulls him away and Punk is taken away on a stretcher.
Triple H v. Brock Lesnar - Lesnar wins with the kimura lock. He refuses to let go after the bell rings and almost breaks Trip’s arm, but Shawn Michaels runs in to save him, and holds up Trip’s arm as they play him out one last time.
Sheamus, Orton, & Big Show vs. the Shield - Sheamus and Show start fighting each other mid-match, which allows the Shield to divide and conquer, and hit Show with the triple powerbomb followed by a pin.
Team Hell No v. Ziggler and Langston - TNH win after Kaitlyn runs in and prevents an attempt by AJ to help her team cheat (thus setting up a Kaitlyn v. AJ feud for the Divas title), but in the process nearly end up killing each other, and after the match the team breaks up while still champions, setting the stage for a Kane v. Bryan fight for control of the championship and a new heel turn for Kane, who’s been driven back into madness by the death of his father and CM Punk’s trashing his legacy.
Alberto del Rio v. Jack Swagger - Alberto narrowly wins after escaping the Patriot Lock. Immediately afterward, Ziggler cashes in his MotB, and a spiteful Zeb Colter hits ADR in his bad knee with one of Ricardo Rodriguez’s crutches, allowing Ziggler to get the pin and the belt. (This sets up an ADR v. Ziggler feud, as well as a Rodriguez v. Colter match with the stipulation that the loser will be deported to Mexico. Rodriguez wins this match at a future PPV, and a series of skits ensue in which Colter tries to eke out a living in Tijuana while the locals gripe about his stealing their jobs and not learning the language.)
Chris Jericho v. Fandango - Fandango wins via an illegal move after his dance partner helps him break out of the Walls of Jericho and then distracts the ref. He forces Jericho to say his name.
Ryback v. Mark Henry - Henry slams Ryback, then Ryback gets up and slams him for a “Hulk slamming Andre” moment and wins the match.
Tons of Funk & Funkadactyls v. Rhodes Scholars and Bella Twins - TF & FD in a controversial win where there are multiple fighters in the ring at the same time, and the ref counts a pin on someone who isn’t the legal man/woman in. Possible face turn for Cody if he and Sandow get into a fight after the match over whose fault it is.
Miz v. Barrett - Miz wins by figure-four, thus proving that you really should download the WWE app, seriously you guys you’re so missing out.
Clean finish by Undertaker. The post-match stuff I was hoping for didn’t happen - altogether, though, this might be one of the best wrestling matches I’ve ever seen. Very suspenseful, and I suddenly have a lot more respect for Paul Heyman. He might possibly be the best heel manager since Bobby Heenan.
HHH by pinfall. Didn’t see that coming. Shawn did run in to save HHH from a chair blow from Heyman, so I wasn’t too far off on suspecting that he’d be relevant somehow.
The pin was on Orton rather than Show, and Show’s heel turn came after the match rather than during it.
TNH wins, but sadly there was no Kaitlyn run-in, and with Kane tagging Bryan in to make the pin the team appear to be closer together than ever.
The match itself went mostly as I expected. Still no run-in from Ziggler, though, which I really was expecting. and which is probably now going to have to happen on Raw or at an upcoming PPV. (And I would seriously love to see the Rodriguez/Colter match I pitched above.) Still a hell of a match, though.
FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN-DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN-GOOOOOOOOOOOOO wins cleanly, surprisingly enough, and as it turns out he actually can wrestle. He might prove to be a decent heel in time if he can lose the ridiculous gimmick.
Ryback got his “Hulk slamming Andre” moment, which is pretty goddamn impressive even when you know Henry was cooperating with the move, but Henry still gets the pin in the end. I have a feeling this feud isn’t over - if I were in charge of booking, I’d have Henry win the United States championship from Cesaro (who did get screwed by not getting a match at 'Mania) and pit him and Ryback in a rematch at an upcoming PPV.
This match apparently got dropped, so I guess we’ll never know. Maybe we’ll get lucky and it’ll be rebooked for Raw tomorrow night, because it did sound like fun.
Went exactly as I predicted, and as far as I know this might be the first time a WWE title has changed hands at what was for all intents and purposes a dark match.
Overall: This was a really good show. Like I said in my previous post, I’ve missed the last 19 Wrestlemanias, but I’ve read about some of them lately, and from all indications the most recent shows were bloated affairs full of backstage promos, filler material, and Snooki. This show had no backstage scenes, minimal live music acts (hell. Living Colour’s still got it), and most of the matches were really suspenseful barnburners with lots of false finishes and a real sense of suspense as to who would come out on top.
I don’t expect him to turn any time soon, for one reason; he’s on the cover of the WWE Annual Report (which didn’t hurt Sheamus’s career, or face push, any when he was on it last year).
As for the missing eight-person tag, that made 2013 the first time since 1997 that no women were in a WrestleMania match. I was a little surprised they didn’t throw in a reference to a similar instance in the past (a 10-man tag-team match scheduled for WrestleMania X was moved to the next night’s Raw because a ladder match took too long) by having, say, the Bellas argue over who would be their team’s “captain”.
Well, last night’s Raw ultimately did have Ziggler cash in and win the belt from an injured Del Rio, as well as the promised eight-man tag (which was fun) and Barrett win the IC title back from the Miz (thus more or less proving that it was a stunt to get people to watch the pre-game show).
IMO, Ziggler isn’t credible as WHC - aside from a few victories against Kane and Daniel Bryan, he’s spent the whole time since I’ve been watching again jobbing out to mid-carders, and I can’t recall a single time he scored a clean victory without his girlfriend or his heavy cheating on his behalf. The idea of him wearing the same strap that once graced the waists of Ric Flair, Hulk Hogan, Sting, Goldberg, and the Rock is just plain silly. I predict a brief feud with Del Rio which ends with him dropping the belt back to him at the next PPV. (PS: I really hope they still do the Rodriguez/Colter match I pitched above.)
They also showed the eight-man tag that was cut from Wrestlemania, and it was fun, but pretty short. They seem to be setting up Cena v. Ryback for a future PPV (prediction: Ryback wins, thus reiginiting his feud with Mark Henry), Undertaker/Kane/Daniel Bryan v. the Shield (which I have no prediction for except that it oughta be awesome), and a rematch between Jericho and Fandango (perhaps have Fandango pick up the US or IC title in the meanwhile to make things interesting.)
I think I picked a good time to get back into wrestling - the booking has been pretty solid the last few months, and WWE
The big news from the post-WM Raw is what didn’t happen - namely, the setup for Rock vs. Brock for WrestleMania 30. Apparently, Rock got seriously injured in the title match, and went home to recuperate (reportedly so he can start filming a new movie soon).
Because Ric Flair was well-known for all of his clean victories while defending the Big Gold Belt?
I mean, pretty much the entire point of Ric Flair being NWA Champion was that he’d go into a territory and weasel and cheat his way through matches so that everyone knows the big hometown hero was the better man and should be the champ, but Flair still managed to get out of town still wearing the belt.
Fact. He’s Shawn Michaels-esque- I could get in the ring with him and he would make me look credible.
They’re doing a pretty similar (although time-compressed) story arc with Ziggler as well, with AJ in the Sherri role and Big E as Diesel.
I like Ziggler a lot. I think he has the ability to be a good champion, provided they give him a few clean wins in defense.
Also, let’s show some love for a ridiculous Jersey crowd. Don’t like the match being shoved down your throat? Cheer the announcers. Cheer the ref. Thank the big show for breaking it up. I LOVED that crowd.
