Here is a wonderful story about the birth of the DDP/Randy Savage feud in WCW in 1997.
So RAW was a thing that happened.
Biggest news (to me) was Angle’s final opponent will be…Baron Corbin. The crowd wasn’t too happy about it. The better opponant would be Cena, but is he even going to be AT 'Mania this year? Althought I guess with it being Corbin it’s the end to their long suffering storyline from Kurt’s GM days
I’d bet good money it won’t be Angle vs. Corbin at WM. Too many swerves, Vince. Don’t hot book WM three weeks before the show!
So, here’s what appears to be the final card for G1 Supercard, the joint ROH/NJPW show emanating from Madison Square Garden the night before Wrestlemania;
- IWGP Heavyweight Championship: Jay White © vs. Kazuchika Okada
- ROH World Championship ladder match: Jay Lethal © vs. Marty Scurll vs. Matt Taven
- IWGP Intercontinental Championship: Tetsuya Naito © vs. Kota Ibushi
- RPW British Heavyweight Championship: Zack Sabre Jr. © vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi
- ROH Tag Team Championship/IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Championship, winner-takes-all; PCO & Brody King © vs. Tama Tonga & Tanga Loa © vs. EVIL & Sanada vs. the Briscoe Brothers
- IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Championship: Taiji Ishimori © vs. Dragon Lee vs. Bandido
- Bully Ray vs. TBA (New York street fight open challenge)
- Women of Honor Championship: Mayu Iwatani © vs. Kelly Klein
- Rush vs. Dalton Castle
- NEVER Openweight Championship/ROH Television Championship, winner-takes-all: Will Ospreay © vs. Jeff Cobb ©
- Honor Rumble (pre-show)
This is the biggest show ROH has ever done, and New Japan’s largest stateside show to date, and it’s the first time ever that a promotion other than WWE has sold out MSG. It’s a stacked card and I’m excited about all the matches on the card, especially since I’ve gotten to meet several of the performers at DEFY meet-and-greets and see them live in person.
It’ll be streaming live on New Japan World and on ROH’s streaming service, as well as on terrestrial PPV, with a 7:30 PM Eastern bell time. (WWE is running Takeover on Friday and the HOF ceremony on Saturday this year, seemingly because they don’t want to risk the viewership drop from running NXT opposite this show.)
Didn’t think the Hart Foundation was getting inducted after Harlem Heat was announced. This is the first time two tag teams are being inducted in the same class, no?
OK, so as part of the drama between Braun Stroman and the Weekend Update guys, Michael Che and Colin Jost said they’d take part in the AtG Battle Royal. Delightful.
I’m thinking there has to be some kind of big swerve here, and that it won’t actually be Che and Jost in the ring. They will actually be Babatunde and Lars Sullivan wearing wigs and they team up to toss Braun out. Che and Jost will laugh from the relative safety of the pressbox, and Braun will climb up there King Kong style and punch his way through the plexiglass to get at them. Then they’ll cry and beg for their lives while remote-controlled squeeze bulbs empty water inside their crotches, making it look like they peed in their pants, just the way Vince likes it. It has to be something really stupid and WTF to break the monotony of 7+ hours of WM.
That would be funny.
On the other hand,
Both get in the ring and before the bell rings, keep running behind people to hide from Braun. The moment the bell rings, Braune charges them and the other wrestlers part like the red sea. They both jump over the top ropes, eliminating themselves. Braun then;
- Steps over the top rope to go after them, eliminating himself in the process, or
- Leans over the ropes and is eliminated by Zack Ryder and Curt Hawking, leading to a “handicap” match with them against Braun on Monday with those other two guys in their corner, or
- Braun bails out of the match to chase them and disappears before returning at the end for a false winner/oh no, Braun was never eliminated conclusion.
wow thats a show if it was 20 years ago i would get tix take a bus to nyc and sleep outside the stadium … (or in the bus station like i did for the “wrestling peace festival” in la
I really hate WWE hot-booking WrestleMania 1 1/2 week’s before the show. Idiots should have known 90% of the card back in January. Instead they are still figuring it out. Assholes.
Wrestling Peace Festival? How is that coordinated? Do the wrestlers refuse to commit violence the whole match?
Hey Asuka, we don’t have anybody talented enough to go against you in WM, so you’re just going to drop your title and not go at all.
Damn, they already photoshopped the title onto Charlotte. Damn Asuka, you got raped girl.
If I were Asuka, I’d be on the next flight to Tokyo and I wouldn’t look back. If I’m a foreign wrestler with limited English skills in NXT, I’m also returning home.
Vince just guaranteed that (a) I will never buy anything WWE branded, and (b) I will never again attend a WWE house show/TV taping/PPV. As my brother pays for the network, he’s not getting my money there either. FUCK YOU VINCE!
Asuka was also in the group shot of babyfaces watching the Gauntlet, AFTER losing the title.
They didn’t even promote the match with Charlotte at the beginning of the show. It looked like a last-minute decision, and it made the belt look worthless. Maybe they’re going to unify the titles, after going through all that effort to show that women’s wrestling was worth a shit.
I would be quite angry if I were going to this year’s WM. There is just nothing compelling in it at all. I hate to say it but I’m most interested in HHH/Bautista because…I mean…what else is there?
Me, I find the Bryan vs. Kofi match at WrestleMania to be very compelling.
Good matches, but only Kofi and Becky have truly interesting stories.
I think I’ll mainly watch WM for the entrances. Kind of like watching the Superbowl for the commercials.
I wonder how late I’ll stay up. They should start the show at 5p, which would be middle of the afternoon on the west coast. Almost guaranteed I’ll be watching the main event sometime on Monday. Transportation might also be an issue. NYC is a commuter town, relying heavily on mass transit. NYC won’t be a problem, but transport to and from the suburbs tends to grow spotty or stop altogether late at night. It’s an issue one can see at Yankee games when they go into long extra innings. At some point, suburbanites have to leave to catch that last train home.
My theory: it’s not so much “unify the titles” as it is an excuse to put the Smackdown title on whichever of Becky or Ronda they decide to have win (and I would not be a bit surprised if the whole “Ronda wants out” reports are just a swerve) so they can have her start showing up on Smackdown, eventually making it a permanent move just before Fox starts airing it in October, after which they can bring back the Raw title and just act as if the unification never happened - just like what happened with the US title after it was merged into the Intercontinental title at the end of 2001 (and brought back 18 months later).
Ronda’s a heel now, and even as a face she was one bad mofo, so I think it’s awfully cute how she’s marking out like a schoolgirl at the news that Joan Jett will play her entrance music live at WrestleMania.
here it is World Wrestling Peace Festival - Wikipedia
and all the ratings were kind … it was a glorified indy show with “legends” who was in and out as fast as they could away with the much vaunted sting/giant match? lasted barley 10 minutes
the arena was seriously run down the security was a bag of dicks ….in fact my favorite story is when I met konnan after the show he was still in the lucha feds and had his barrio og thing going on …. he was involved in the main event and was singing programs after the show ended well bag o’ dicks security was literately shoving people out the minute it was ending there were about 20 people down at ring and they were coming to hassle us and all konnan did was glare at them and did that cross between a "lets go " flex and hands on his hips thing they used to do and after a brief stare down the security guys were like " well don’t take too long and split …… and he said a few things is Spanish were unkind but talked to us and he hoped he could get signed with something in the us ….
