Any WWE fans in the audience? (Part 1)

Smackdown is moving to the USA network?

Also while I’m thinking of it and listening to a podcast: They keep saying that WWE is so stupid for not putting NXT on TV, but I don’t think that would be a wise business decision for the WWE. If they do that, NXT will be succumbed to being Smackdown mini. They will have to go around commercial constraints, worry more about budget, try too hard to make it epic…and ultimately will fail.

Keeping it on The Network makes people want to buy into the network and they should market it as the premiere show on the network (instead of focusing on PPVs).

I 1000% agree and say that the WWE needs to market NXT better, but keep it off TV please

Just like anything else, NXT will suck once everybody else notices it.

We’ll always have Lucha Underground.

…Which needs to get big and fast so that wwe has REAL competition.

Another problem that I have is with Trips trying to say that he wants NXT to be it’s own brand like WCW or ECW. That can’t happen if they’re both owned by the same company. The big boy will ALWAYS take the best talent and ALWAYS not let the sister project get ahead of it.

The biggest problem with LU though is that its such an esoteric style of wrestling that they don’t have as much a pool to choose from. No Outsiders there ya know?

Lucha libre isn’t esoteric, they’re partnered with AAA so they’ve got access to an entire roster of luchadores, and they’re not strictly lucha libre. Probably half the roster is indie workers from PWG and the like.

How many AAA wrestlers are in the WWE, ROH, New Japan etc. style?

Asking for fact, not being snarky or using sarcasm to make my point.

I ask because having not seen any of it I can assume that LU is full of awesome high-flying action…and that’s it. If you like that style then you’re in heaven, but if you’re a fan of the more traditional Lesnar/Ambrose/Rollins how much satisfaction are you getting out of watching Luchas?

I’m-a just leave this here. Warning: BLOOD.

Grave Consequences

Heh. Hogan talking about criticism of him inducting Macho Man. “They thought I would try to make it all about me”. [del]Dude[/del] Brother, I thought that during your speech.

No sooner than I mentioned WCWC here, it’s being reported that Paragon Pro Wrestling, a Las Vegas-based promotion which is run by the same guy, has landed a nationwide cable TV deal.

I guess everyone wants a piece of the pie now that TNA is slowly fading into obscurity and there’s a market for the territorial system that Vince McMahon killed 30 years ago to rise again and sell itself to people who aren’t interested in what he has to offer.

STC, haven’t you been reading mine and Smapti’s empassioned LU reviews? LU is much more than high-flying spots. They incorporate the wrestling into a horror/action movie setting and output an entirely different experience than WWE & TNA. It’s not a matter of preferring lucha style over American. It’s more niche than NXT if you want to get all hipster about it.

And, as I mentioned before, probably half or so of the roster are indie guys and/or guys who came from WWE. On any given show, you’re going to see a bunch of different styles. I mean… Johnny Mundo was John Morrison on WWE; he works an acrobatic style, but I don’t think I’d call it traditional LL. The announcers always reference parkour to describe it. Big Ryck was in WWE as well. He’s a big man who mostly works a big man power-based style. Angelico actually is from AAA, but seems to work his own unique style; it may be just that he’s so frickin’ lanky it gives him a very particular look. CAGE, who we are repeatedly told isn’t a man, but a MACHINE, is a huge dude from PWG who does an big man indie style. Last episode we got two more guys from PWG I think–The Mack, who is a big man that moves like no man his size should, and Kill Shot, who actually is pretty flippy. There’s really a ton of variety.

Aside from that, they’re not approaching it as a traditional promotion; this is a wrestling-based TV show. They’re trying to be something new under the sun, and so far, they’re doing really well with it.

Also, really, watch Grave Consequences.

TBH I never read your empassioned reviews since it’s something I can’t watch so I prefer to remain blissfully unaware of what is, I’m sure, a better overall product.

I’m happy to hear that though because hopefully LU gets a big enough following, a cable deal, and better exposure so that it can truly be competition to WWE and make sure that WWE stays the course and gives us the best it can give

It has a cable deal! Just on a bit of an upstart channel with limited distribution.

They put a bunch of stuff on YouTube as well.

BAAANNNHHHH*

It’s Dysfunctional Trios day! Opening match is Son of Havoc, Ivelisse and Angelico vs Drago, Aerostar and Fenix. SoH and Ivie are on the outs, with horn dog Angelico entangled in their drama. Aerostar and Drago have been facing each other in a best of 5 series with the series tied at 2-2, so they’re trying to trump each other. At least Fenix didn’t have didn’t have vamp Catrina looming over his shoulder, but he kept having to act as peacemaker between Drago and Aerostar.

Angelico acted as fall guy for most of the match. Every time Ivelisse came in, she used super bitch power to overcome her male opponents and slap SoH while they were reeling. About half the match was various luchas setting themselves up outside like bowling pins for strikes from a jumper inside the ring. JUMP crash JUMP crash JUMP crash… of course, Aerostar and Drago would accidentally annihilate each other amidst the chaos. At the end, Ivelisse refused a tag from SoH and left the ring, but he managed to turn his misfortune into a double springboard on A & D, and then hit a shooting star press ftw. Super fun match.

Next, friends Sexy Star and Super Fly came out for a match, and then Dario Cueto emerged from his office and told them he would give them a reason not to be so friendly to each other and made this a Mask vs Mask match. The loser must unmask. Matt & Vampiro stressed how forcing a lucha to unmask is considered a huge insult to their integrity. It’s also Dario’s subtle way of shitting on Sexy, as he doesn’t want freaks like her sullying his temple. Which is why he keeps a mass murderer locked in the basement.

By this point, it’s easy to think of the female luchas as just another one of the guys. SS and SF work a fairly technical match, with SS taking advantage of SF’s blown spot for a rollup pin. At this point, the announcers explain that the unmasking is an actual ceremony. The loser prostrates in front of the winner, who removes the mask. SS is obviously reluctant to do this to her friend, but the dude’s already got rock star hair and probably had some kind of maskless career prior to LU, so it’s more of a career rebranding. After the unmasking, Pentagon Jr. ambushes the two, knocks SS out of the ring, and makes Super Fly a Super Gimp.

Finally, Prince Puma faces King Cuerno for the LU championship. I see Konnan’s abusive mentor relationship with Puma as a parallel to Pulp Fiction at this point. Remember the scene where we see Marsellus from behind, speaking to Butch, advising him to overcome his pride and take the money to throw his next match? Konnan wants Puma to accept Hernandez as a team member, which Puma seems reluctant to do.

Sometimes Dario Cueto’s pronouncements are confusing, I assume because some things get lost in translation, but I think next week Puma’s team takes on King Cuerno’s team in Trios competition, but tonight the two wrestle single. KC has Cage and El Tejano on his side, and Puma has selected Johnny Mundo as his 3rd team member, which Konnan doesn’t like.

I like Cuerno’s style of preying on his opponent’s vulnerability and launching spears on their weak spots. Puma is like the Shawn Michaels of LU. He takes sick bumps and comes back in spectacular fashion. The extra team members lurking outside the ring made for some confusing moments, as the bad guys are always going to get in cheap shots and the good guys are somehow unable to prevent this from happening. I don’t know if they were filling in the gaps from unfinished scripts or what, but the whole match turned into a massive clusterfuck and it became hard to identify who was doing what for why. Hernandez tries to help Puma, but Puma rebuffs him. At the same time, Hernandez and Cage are supposed to be enemies, but Hernandez won’t retaliate because Puma doesn’t want his help or something. Puma wins at the end, and all 6 guys brawl to end the show.

Back to work…

Real quick:

On a scale from 1-10, how likely is it that I can sneak a threesome in with Ms. Cups if I call it a “triple threat match”?

just wondering

It’s pretty much the theme of the entire tournament. Both the teams from this week were “Wacky Tag Team Partners that Don’t Get Along,” and last week we had the dysfunctional pairing of Super Fly, Sexy Star and Pentagon Jr. Next week we have Puma tagging with Johnny Mundo, who Konnan doesn’t like, and Hernandez, who pretty much has an “I’m turning on you first chance I get” sign attached to him, facing a super-alpha-male-heel team that by all rights should implode immediately, unless they succumb to the tendency to have heels get along just because.

Big Ryck and friends should probably win just by virtue of being the only ones that actually can work as a team.

First of all, does the word “threat” ever figure into a sexual situation with you and Madam T-Cups? Do you unzip and stick out your tongue and say “double threat, baby!” or does she handle her mammaries like water balloons and tell you likewise? If so, the proposal might exceed 1.

Alas, I knew how this one was going to turn out - Super Fly was unmasked in Mexico back in December (by Aerostar, of all people) and it’s actually pretty surprising that they allowed him to keep the mask on in LU for this long - this episode was taped in February. It was a great magnificent bastard moment on Dario Cueto’s part as well - as much as he talks about respecting the grand traditions of the Aztec warriors and lucha libre, what he really enjoys is sowing conflict and provoking friends into turning against each other for his amusement.

It’s interesting that they’re building a Sexy Star vs. Pentagon Jr. feud - in Mexico, not only are they tag team partners, but they’re the reigning mixed tag champions. I wonder if AAA actually acknowledges stuff that happens in LU on Mexican TV, or if they’re just treating it as some sort of parallel universe.

Did you see the Superman punch Puma gave Cuerno? I want to strap Roman Reigns into a chair with his eyes pried open Clockwork Orange style and force him to watch that clip over and over again. I did enjoy the way the two fighters’ cornermen got involved in the match, and the tecnicos actually respecting El Texano Jr’.s bullwhip as a dangerous weapon instead of just a prop was a nice touch. (It is spelled “Texano”, BTW, which is the usual way that word is spelled in Mexico; the American “Tejano” is a deviation based on the J and X as used in Spanish both sounding pretty much the same to Anglophone ears.) If I heard Matt Striker correctly, he said the title can change hands by countout in LU, which is an interesting change I don’t think I’ve seen used elsewhere.

Don’t have time to watch NXT today, so I’ll catch that tomorrow morning.

According to Wikipedia, “Bright House Networks, Comcast, Cox Communications, DirecTV, Dish Network, Sling TV, Suddenlink Communications, Google Fiber and Time Warner Cable” all carry El Rey, so if you have any of those, you can watch Lucha Underground. And Sling is a web service that you can subscribe to online from anywhere in the country, so it’s available to you even if you don’t live in any of those cable companies’ service area.

It’s a fairly new channel with a fairly niche target demographic (Latino Americans who primarily speak English and grindhouse geeks), but it’s worth it for LU alone.

I’m a rasslin’ fan, so I’m illiterate. I use the J because I think of the ZZ Top album Tejas. I misspell half their names anyway, and can’t remember if the lanky guy’s name is Argentio or Angelico. I don’t have to spell them right to like them.
