Anybody else excited about "Kill Bill"?

I’m glad she didn’t. Being nothing like Charlie’s Angels is a very, very good thing, IMO.

It’ll be interesting to see how this one does. A hard-core group of fans is going to eat it up (roughly the same bunch that has Army of Darkness in their all-time Top 10 list.)

On the other hand, many of the people who liked Tarentino’s other movies for their characters and dialogue more than the gunplay may be disappointed in an slick, all-out action extravaganza … especially because it doesn’t have an ending. I can see it getting some very hostile reviews from the press.

Will the general public take it to its bosom, though? I haven’t the faintest idea.

You should stop caring what the general public thinks about movies, you will be a lot happier. When the general public gets considered in movie making, Scooby Doo is produced.

I’m more looking forward to the latest movie from the Coen Bros. coming out the same day.

Tars, I cling to the notion that one can be interested in what the general public thinks without necessarily agreeing with it.

This guy liked it but apparently for all the wrong reasons.

Wumpus: Those hardcore fans, of which I am one, are far more likely to have Evil Dead 2 on their list than Army of Darkness, or at least rank it higher.

gobear: I am in complete agreement. I’ve written an essay before on why Jackie Brown is better than Pulp Fiction, and why I like it more, even though I’m a huge fan of both films. I’m looking forward to this movie more than just about anything else this year except maybe Return of the King.

I was looking forward to it during the first few times I saw the trrailer, although part of that was playing “spot the film ‘homage’” during the fight scenes. Then I made the mistake of reading the interview with him in Fangoria magazine. He considers this his “grindhouse” flick (or flicks). Not just his tribute to martial arts flicks. He was mentioning tributes to spaghetti westerns, blaxploitation, and anime as well as the obvious HK Shaw Bros. martial arts, swordsman and Japanese samurai flicks.

I worry about it being the “editless wankfest” mentioned earlier and trying too hard to cram too many genre touches into one story (now two films). Tarentino seemed proud (in his usual rambling verbal way) that there’s a roughly eight minute anime segment, as well as that he filmed a scene of Carradine playing a flute (like no one else ever has him do that, he even did it during his cameo on Alias). I realize he’s a big fanboy himself, I just hope the films can hold up to his “kid in a candy store” filmmaking dream.

gobear hit on it, pretty much, when he cited Jackie Brown as Tarantino’s “70’s blaxpoitation movie.” That’s an apt description of it, and most of its fans will say that to really appreciate it, you have to be familiar with the standard tropes of blaxploitation movies, and how Jackie Brown plays on them.

Well, I am familiar with said tropes, and I see that Jackie Brown uses them both as straight act and as parody. But I never much liked blaxploitation movies, so it stands to reason that I wouldn’t like Jackie Brown much. shrugs No big deal. I’m, not even saying it’s a bad movie, just that I didn’t get much out of it, though it had a couple parts I liked.

It always interests me to hear which Tarantino film people like most… it’s rare to find much agreement on it. Personally, I think Reservoir Dogs is by far his best work, but I’m a big fan of heist movies, so that fits for me. Pulp Fiction has moments of brilliance but is spotty for my tastes. But everyone’s different… Tarantino definitely can’t be accused of going for the same audience with every movie.

I’ve been looking forward to it for awhile. My brother mentioned it to me a few months ago, and I looked on the IMDb to see if Kill Bill was really going to happen. I now see it has a “part I” added to the title. Guess I’m out of the loop, since I’ve only seen one trailer and it looked like a kung fu movie.

I think it will be a great movie, if given the chance. I found I liked Four Rooms quite a bit, when I just disassociated it with Tarantino in my mind. It’s a hilarious film, but not if I’m expecting a Reservoir Dogs follow up. So, I think I’ll go into this one expecting nothing, except maybe a tangent on the characters in True Romance and the kung fu fascination.

Same brother mentioned another film in the works, but I’ve forgotten the title he gave me. I don’t see mention of it on the IMDb yet, so who knows.

Am I the only one who thinks of Jackie Brown not as Tarantino’s blaxploitation movie but as Tarantino’s Elmore Leonard movie?

It’s a crazy theory, I know, but there just may be something to it.

I think it’s a lot of both and more, Wumpus.

I read the script. I can’t wait.

Has nothing to do with the film, but I used to be Tarantino’s neighbor on N. Crescent Heights in West Hollywood. Nice guy - as far as neighbors go.

I like his films and I think he has a style that can make a lot of things work - even stuff that might be cliche’ in other films.

Early Hollywood “buzz” by people who have seen it is that it is going to be a big hit.

Man, I remember catching the trailer on TV and just sitting there open-mouthed. And just watched it again. You’ve got 1. Uma, 2. Lucy Liu, 3. Swordfighting 4. With samurai swords, and 5. David Carradine, Not to mention 6. Samuel “Say What AGAIN!” L. Jackson and it’s all directed by 7. Tarantino, who rules.

Call me a sucker, but it’s on my must-see list. And Army of Darkness IS one of my favorite movies, so take away my Elite Film Snob Card!

Thanks for the answers, all.

I’m looking forward to seeing it but I’m hoping it doesn’t turn out to be a mindless action “editless wankfest”. I loved Pulp Fiction more for the great script then the violence (although that was good too).

How do you write two hundred and forty-two pages of “ok, so she kicks him, fights her, then a whole bunch of nijas attack…” I hope they’ll show another commercial at some point that shows something about the plot. If there is one.

Looks awful.

I hate Tarantino anyway, he’s a creepy weirdo who makes creepy weirdo movies.

I am so there opening day. Both opening days, in fact–October 10th and whenever Part Two comes out in February!

I love Tarantino and martial arts movies (and Army of Darkness, for that matter), and I’m awaiting Kill Bill even more than Return of the King or the final Matrix serial.

elfkin477, I haven’t read the script for the movies, but if I remember from his earlier movies Tarantino often writes detailed descriptions of the scenes, casting choices, characters’ wardrobe, background music, etc. Considering the sheer number of homages and tributes these films are apparently packed with (notice how prominent the Bruce Lee-style yellow track suit Uma Thurman wears is, as has already been mentioned) I can see how the script would get that big.
