Up there in Lake Superior, that is.
I’ve visited the websites, and seen all the tourist blurbs. But now I want feedback from someone who’s actually been there.

Give Dave Wells a buzz at info@naturallysuperior.com (I’ve come across his crew at the Rossport Sea Kayak Symposium for several years, and last year had a couple of his crew help out as a safety boaters with my group, so I feel comfortable in recommending them as folks who will give you the straight dope.)
Another couple of folks to try would be Gary and Joanie McGuffin, who have paddled around the lake and reside down at that end of the lake. I don’t know if they have been out to the island or not, but I expect that they could get you in touch with someone who has. They are at adventurers@sympatico.ca. (I work with them on environmental matters, and can recommend them as good people with good information.)
