Anybody going to watch GLOW on Netflix?

I watched the whole thing. I liked it. It’s far more about the interaction between the women (and the director) than the wrestling itself. The scene when Debbie charges into the gym to confront Ruth is among the best 5 minutes of TV I’ve seen this year.

Annie’s Boobs? (And I don’t mean the monkey.) I’m in!

We missed you too, bunky.

I have to admit, this has me a little puzzled. I am not being defensive in the least. I know that this format is getting old and dated, participation is down and the demographics skew older than most. But I don’t see why this thread would set you off like that. Is GLOW really so popular/hyped that it’s utterly condemning that this thread hasn’t received a million responses? Last year’s nostalgia driven Netflix project “Stranger Things” got lots of comment. I don’t get it.

Dee Booher was a legitimate wrestler.

I hate wrestling, but I enjoyed the show a lot. Netflix is great at drawing me in with ensembles full of diverse women.

I am almost uncomfortable watching Maron’s character. He is the embodiment of my father if my father had been slightly successful and it’s really surreal and creepy when he’s on. He’s doing an outstanding job; it’s just my personal issues being triggered.

Ed O’Neill was a real athlete as well. He was an UFA signed by the Steelers.

I thought that Marc Maron stole the show.

“Look, I’m sorry I tried to fuck you, okay? If you’d told me you were my daughter I would never have done that. Oh, uh, black, thank you.”

Maron is great in everything I’ve seen him do. I love him and Chris Hardwick when they verbally spar on @Midnight

I watched the series after someone recommended it at a party. I really liked it!

I didn’t remember GLOW at all (I was 7 when it was on) but I did remember that episode of Married…With Children.

I recomended it to my parents because I thought it was a fairly decent docu-series with little sex and nudity. I guess I forgot about earlier scenes by the time I was done with it

I immediately watched the documentary after I finished the series. That was good! Everyone had positive things to say, pretty much. They liked their time with GLOW.

About Allison Brie - I had absolutely no idea that was her, until I went to IMDB to see if this unknown actress had been in anything else.

There has been tremendous response to this show. I have been reading dozens of rave reviews, all of which this delightful series deserves. On a whim, I thought I’d check out the Dope’s response, and I was shocked at the uninformed views. There’s a reason I’ve been away from here for so long-it no longer is a place to come for analysis of current pop culture. And yeah, you didn’t miss me, thanks silenius, for making it personal. It’s just sad. This was the only place I ever paid to post, so I’m sorry to see it’s no longer relevant to me and only me. No judgement on any Dopers.

Both of these posts are threadshitting. If you have no interest in a topic or just want to post about what a “sad state” you think the boards have gone into…air your opinion in ATMB, don’t post in this thread.

I enjoyed it and recommend watching.

Its fun and easy to binge. Just 10 thirty minute episodes.

And yes it really picks up about halfway through.

@Idle Thoughts:
I know it’s not right to criticise moderation but that really isn’t threadshitting. He’s criticising some of the (in his opinion) superficial, negative and I guess lack of responses. He is doing the opposite of saying this isn’t a worthy thread subiect, that’s for sure.

Also, he was answering an honest question from me in the second post.

Finished the series…quite enjoyed the wrestling in the last episode… The non-wrestlers among the actresses took to their training quite well.

The Liberty Belle twist was pretty predictable, by both wrestling and regular fiction narrative rules, but I was actually caught offguard by the Welfare Queen twist. And Sam being behind it.

On the note of Sam…I wonder just what Justine’s line of thought was on not telling him she was his daughter. On an out of universe note it’s obvious - so the reveal could happen in such a dramatic (and embarrassing for both of them) way - but once she saw he was a serial sexual harasser, she really should have cleared things up…

I’ve never been a fan of “professional” wrestling, and was unaware GLOW was even a real thing until this thread, but my understanding is that individual performers can become “faces” and then turn “heel” and vice versa, so the actual character overview is not inherently bad, just the performer. There’s no way a Soviet supremacist in the 80s, an Islamic terroist or a welfare queen could ever be “faces”.

Thank you, CarnalK, I appreciate your defense. I was honestly shocked at the Dope’s non-response to what is one of this year’s biggest shows, and I regret the negativity in my first post. It was a sad summary of what I see as the downturn this site has taken with regard to Cafe Society, and not meant to be a threadshit in any way. But I can see how it could be seen as that, and I apologize.

I also can’t recommend Glow enough. It is brilliant, and I hate wrestling with the fire of a thousand nuns. Just fantastic writing, acting and directing.

1986: Nikita “The Russian Nightmare” Koloff turns face when he teams with Dusty “The American Dream” Rhodes against The Four Horseman. All it takes is the right partner and right story.

I watched the whole thing and enjoyed it and I look forward to the second season. All the actresses were great, and I was surprised by how good Marc Maron was. I also really liked the 80sness of it all, the pizza boy getting out of the car to Tears for Fears’ Head over Heels was a highlight, as was the drug robot at the party. And I do love a show that is primarily about women, and it having a nice variety of characters.

Is it one of the year’s biggest shows? I haven’t had that impression. Since it’s Netflix you can’t measure ratings, but a non-scientific way is to look at social media. And to compare Glow against Stranger Things and a somewhat popular prestige show from this year, American Gods, the followers are as follows:

[ul]
[li]GLOW- Facebook: 94,936; Twitter: 15.2K[/li][li]Stranger Things- Facebook: 3,998,609; Twitter: 712K[/li][li]American Gods- Facebook: 403,115; Twitter: 59.9K[/li][/ul]

GLOW is an enjoyable show, but I wouldn’t say that it’s brilliant, or one of the year’s biggest shows. It might grow in popularity as more people watch it, or might fade away in discussion as other shows are released during the year.

I did enjoy it, but it was made to be more enjoyable than top-tier. It wasn’t like Mad Men in showing an accurate period piece show, and showing the sexism that they all would have faced, and a lot of other troubles they would have had. Things would be touched on but then pretty well breezed past. But neither was it as crazy or comedic as it could have been considering it’s subject matter. It went pleasantly down the middle.

If there is something I’m missing about it’s brilliance I would love to hear about it and give it more consideration.

It reads exactly like it, both posts do…so if either of you want to discuss it and if it’s threadshitting or not (I maintain it is), please let’s talk about it in ATMB rather than debate it here.
