I know they offer custom shirts at Lands End and I offered to get a couple for my boyfriend, but he didn’t like the range of fabric choices and he also thought they were too expensive (of course, he thinks everything that doesn’t come from Goodwill is too expensive.)
This came about because when I was on vacation he went and washed his own shirts and everything shrunk. Dumbass. So I measured him for new ones and found out that although he wears dress shirts with snappy suits and such all the time, he doesn’t have a single one that fits him! None of them are comfortable in the neck. So I measure him and I find out why - he’s a weird ape-creature. His neck came out at 19 but his arms at IIRC 29 or something - not a size that exists in the stores. I keep trying to get him to go out and actually try on a bunch of shirts to find out what “parts” fit the best - does a 19 inch neck feel good, does a 29 inch sleeve feel good? So we’d know a custom shirt would work. He hasn’t done it yet.
So anyway, I see that there’s tons of websites of varying quality that advertise custom shirts. Which ones have you used and been satisfied with that are also cost effective?
I’ve bought a number of custom shirts from Just White Shirts, who also ship to the U.S. (they’re based in Toronto). They have a logo for “The Shirt Store New York,” with a link that doesn’t seem to make too much difference to the page you’re on, so I’m not exactly sure what the connotation of it is.
I’ve still got some of the shirts that I bought 10 years ago. And I’ve bought more, more recently. They seem to be about $150 CAD these days; dunno if that’s in your price range.
Nordstrom makes semi-custom shirts of nice quality, albeit probably slightly more expensive than what Cerowyn linked. I have also bought a lot from the Tom James Co., where the salesman comes to your office and measures you. They have a very wide range of styles and prices, but I’ve always been pleased with their work.
The quality will be pretty decent unless he’s used to really finely made shirts. Fit is usually pretty good, but it’s possible to get a lousy shirt sometimes. The other major factor is your ability to measure, of course. Customer service is really awful and they can be slow, especially Jantzen unless they’re changed their ways. Basically it can be a good choice if you want a really affordable good fitting shirt and can avoid fretting when it takes a long time to come and nobody can give you an instant update on the status the way an American company could.
