Anybody heard of this wine?

So, on a whim, I stopped by the gift shop/liquor store on the way home, to see if they had anything neat and, in a dusty corner of their pathetically small wine section (understandable, they’re mostly a nihonshu dealer), I found this. It was priced really cheap, only 700 yen (about $7.75 US) so I decided to give it a try.

Basically, it’s a vintage 1995 Bordeaux White. Bordeaux, IIRC, is more known for reds than whites and I have never heard of this one. The name of the vineyard is Château Darzac. The wine itself is apparently called “Entre Deux Mers.” All I know is that it is quite dry with a slightly fruity, lemony backdrop. Not bad, really, but not particularly amazing, either. I’m not a huge white wine drinker, but, has anybody else had this wine before?

I’ve never had that particular Bordeaux, but I just popped in to let you know that the predominant white varietals grown in Bordeaux are Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Muscadelle. They make some great white wine over there.

“Entre Deux Mers” is the appellation, not the name of that particular wine. Entre Deux Mers is the area between the Garonne and Dordogne rivers in Bordeaux.

1995 is probably on the old side for that wine. Not that white Bordeaux can’t age, but this was an inexpensive bottle that was probably forgotten. And, as you said, good but not great.

I figured it was past its prime. Actually, when I bought it I joked with a friend that I was buying a bottle of vinegar.

I meant appellation instead of name, I’m going to blame the wine on that.

I checked around on Google and it seems that Château Darzac mainly makes cheaper wines in the $8-$12 a bottle range. Pretty much the equivalent of buying an old Yellowtail.

Still, not a horrible wine by any stretch. I had it with some cod. Tasty times were had.
