He is awesome. His new CD, On and On, came out yesterday. If you liked his first CD, you’d definitely like this new one. And you’d know a lot of the songs if you’ve ever been to one of his concerts.
Is he just a California thing mainly or is he semi-famous anywhere else in the country (like he should!)?
If you haven’t heard him, he’s kind of like a mix between Dave Matthews, Ben Harper, and Don Ho (I guess). I recommend you pick it up.
As an aside, I went to Best Buy to buy it and it had $13.99 as the price, which I figured was about right but it rang up only $8.99 when I got to the register. I noticed that sometimes happens at Target when I buy stuff too - Things get scanned at “surprise” discounts. Weird.
Not only have I heard of him, I was one of the very lucky people to be at his CD release concert/party last night. I was the old guy in the back. His stuff is nice, folksy ballads and some reggae-ish stuff too. I love that younger people are listening to acoustic music. As we were driving home, my wife and I were also wondering if his fame was beyond Southern California.
They’re playing a couple of his songs regularly on WXRT here in Chicago. I don’t know if other radio stations have picked his stuff up yet, though.
That said, I enjoy his music. It’s a tough thing when the radio plays one or two songs so heavily, though - I don’t know if I’ll necessarily run out and buy the CD because of how much I’m hearing it now, but once those songs fade from rotation, I see it as likely that I’ll miss them enough to buy it!
But yes, it appears that he is catching on outside of CA.
I’ve been enjoying his first album – which was sent to me by an old bf, who was sent it by an old friend of his – and, yup, we’re all former gauchos (UCSB alums), so I don’t know if my Philly address counts.
I saw Jack Johnson perform a couple of songs with G-Love at the Coachella Festival. Hadn’t really heard either of them before that (but that’s the great thing about Coachella, discovering new stuff). It was nice to hear at the end of a two long, fun days of dancing etc.
the original version (g love) was performed with jack and garett both singing, and garett’s band backing them up… but yeah, it was written by jack and both of their versions are fantastic… the g love version is a lot funkier and jack’s is folkier, but i love them both… i got my copy of ‘on and on’ a week early courtesy of the itunes music store
He just played the Beale Street Music Festival. And 130,000 people attended. So, yes, we’ve heard of him. I have his last CD, but I’m burnt out on it. Like his voice, though, so maybe I’ll give the new one a try.
On a side note, you can tell the age/target audience of the reviewer when he says things like, ““On And On” was produced by Mario Caldato Jr. who has worked with Beck, John Lee Hooker, Ozomatli, and most notably, The Beastie Boys.”
