I’m so freaking bored – really need something to do – and at this point it actually kinda sounds like it might be fun.
I was a hippy in Haight Ashbury with flowers in my hair – but I was only ever interested in smoking dope and dropping acid, never got interested in ‘the scene’ expect for a few peace marches. I had jobs and stuff.
Anyway, I stumbled across a youtube video of a drum circle. Until this year there was a First Saturday Art Walk in a nearby town and there was always a group hanging out on Main Street beating on drums. I could do that. Sounds like a good way to maintain socials distancing but still kinda be able to hang out somewhere.
Anybody here ever done this? Know what sort of drum to look for? Suggestions on how find a group or start one now that that aren’t any sort of meetings, groups, get-togethers going on? Know any problems that arise with such a thing?
It’s been a while but I enjoyed my drum circle days in the 90s. A drum circle in public (and not buskers like Bucket Boys) is, pretty much by definition, open to others to join in. Having never owned a drum, I think that there must have been one or two supporters that bring multiple instruments for passersby to pick up and participate for a while before handing off to someone else. Once established at a regular time & place, others might show up with their own instruments like described (first Saturdays at the Art Walk) in the OP.
One of the best ones I saw had a guy with a battery powered bass & amplifier. Just a few notes here and there really made music out of the drumming.
If buying something, I’d consider a cajón since it’s also a seat. You could mount straps to it to wear like a backpack or have something made of fabric for transport.
I’ve never participated in one, but pre-COVID, one was hosted at a nearby Unitarian church. I used to see it promoted in the newspaper all the time, and on their marquee.
