Drum Circles

I’m a drummer in the Cleveland OH area, and drum circles here are rather rare. I go to one the last Friday of each month Oct-May. Matter of fact, the next one here is 26Oct 7-10pm. E-mail me if you’d like info.

Do any of you participate in drum circles? Where and when are they held?

The only drum circles I’ve been involved with were under the overpass at RFK stadium when the Dead was in town. Man what a ride!!!

Mr. S and I do. (We’re in central WI.) We have a good friend who makes his living giving drum presentations in schools, libraries, group homes, corporations, etc., and he turned us on to it. We started out with one lonely Taos frame drum, and now I think we must have 20 drums, including my big djembe, two ashikos, some ceramic drums, and my favorite Wayne Manthey frame drum with the gorgeous walnut-stained head and hand-decorated beater.

Haven’t been to a circle for a while, though. Bill’s public drum circles tend to get too big for our taste – you can’t hear yourself or anyone else through the wall of noise. We like the intimate private drummings that Bill usually holds at his house, but the last time he had one it was really humid and the drum heads were like paper bags, so we couldn’t play. :frowning:

Man, those were great. You could hear the drumming from all over the RFK parking lot. When I was under the overpass the percussion was so intense it affected my balance. Good times. Good times.

They have a birthday party for Eeyore every year here in Austin. They have the drum circles. They are pretty good, but not as… thunderous as those RFK circles.

Thanks for bringing back a great memory.

Glastonbury Festival.

Sacred Circle (ancient upright stone circle bit like Stone Henge) at the top of hill overlooking Festival but within site.

Continuously for five entire days and nights.

Various random percussion instruments.

Lots of people dancing.

Familiar plant-like smell drifting across.

Various white papery sticks set on fire and passed from person to person.

Well worth a visit.
