Anybody know the names of any Indian beers?

Just always wanted to try them, and I have access to a sort of beer connoisseur, if there is such a thing. I would like her to try them and tell me if they are any good compared to others, since to me all beer tastes awful.

Anybody? Yoohoo!

I’ve had [url=http://www.cobrabeer.com/]Cobra** beer. IANA Beer connoisseur bit it tasted good to me. I’ve heard good things about it too.

You’d think I was drinking it now with that coding :smack:

Tiger, Cobra & Kingfisher are the only ones I can think of off the top of my head. All are nice, though.

Thank you! these are surprisingly cool names. Now I have to find a bar that serves them…are they common or hard to find in NY? (Not NYC)

They’re pretty prominent in British Indian restaurants. (The above two posters are IIRC Brits as well as me.)

There’s also Taj Mahal.

Yep - every supermarket around here stocks at least one of them

I seem to recall a decent one called “Guru”. Haven’t seen it in years, though.

Both Taj Mahal and Kingfisher are commonly available in Indian restaurants in the Washington, D.C., area.

Taj Mahal, King Fisher, and Himalayan Blue are the three that are served at all the Indian Restaurants in Los Angeles. All three are good beers, crisp with just a hint of sweetness (though I am partial to Himalayan Blue myself)

All deference  to Eonwe’s taste, but unless you’ve got a strong constitution, avoid Taj Mahal at all costs. Both times I’ve had it in The States – in Los Angeles and Denver – it has yielded “The Schlitz” in taste and regrettably, gastric effect.

Personally, I think Cobra is very good. Crisp and tangy like a Kirin Ichiban, with a light, heady feel. Warmed a bit (so that it’s not fridge-cool) and served in a glass, it’s excellent with spicy food.

Just don’t mistake it for King Cobra. <deep shudder>

Now now, I wasn’t saying I loved it… just giving options.

But, I had it once, and it didn’t disagree with me. Maybe it was the vindaloo that did you in.

There is also a Raj beer, which very occasionally shows up at my favourite Indian restaurant. It is similar to Kingfisher but with a slightly fuller body. It also comes in huge bottles!

Nitpick: Tiger beer is from Singapore.

Kingfisher and Cobra are both lovely. Perfect with a Jalfrezi or a Madras!

If you don’t like the beer, you could always try the wine. The only one really worth it is Omar Khayyam - an Indian “champagne”.

Well, the bar that I would check in Albany is the legendary Mahar’s (I haven’t been there, living in Southwestern PA/Northern WV as I do, but I want to give it a try!), which is located at 1110 Madison Ave, phone # (518) 459-9416.

Incidentally, I was going to go outside the box a bit and recommend the fantastic Lion Stout from Sri Lanka, but after Googling a bit decided that’s not a good idea (politically, not beer-wise…the beer is awesome, likely better than any of the lagers listed here, IMO of course!!)
