Beer drinkers, What is the best beer in the world?

Beer lovers, what is the best beer in the world, in your opinion?

It really depends on your mood and what goes with it. There are also too many different types of beer that are as different as Coke and Tonic Water. People with taste will disagree quite a bit about what is the “best”.

Two of my favorites are Augustiner Helles, very refreshing with an interesting taste, and Duckstein, a red beer that tries to market itself as very upscale (and sells for about 2x the price of regular beer in Germany) but that is also very, very nice.

An honorable mention should go to Rothaus Pils from the Black Forest, it has a flavor that no other beer that I know comes close to replicating - it really tastes of forest. Alas, too many choices!

Whatta you got?

Shiner Bock

Stone IPA

Carlsberg, probably.

I’ve been drinking a lot of high end beers lately, and I couldn’t even pick a “best” in a single category. So many great beers, so little time.

Well, been sober 8 years, but back in the day my go to was Abita Turbodog. But as was said before, what have you got? It wasn’t exactly hard to find good beer 10 years ago, but I’m always a tad amazed when I find myself in a supermarket liquor aisle, to see the incredible array of micro and foreign brews. It is indeed a good day to enjoy liquid bread!

Westlevaren XII is widely considered to be the best beer in the world but I think that’s mostly because it’s so hard to get. I’ve had St Bernardus Abt 12 which is supposed to be very similar. If so, it’s a very good beer. I’m also partial to Delerium Nocturnum. I apparently have a thing for Belgian Style beers.

I can’t even name the single best beer in my fridge, although this week I am working through a growler of a double IPA from Two Roads Brewery. My wife is preferring their Pils.

What really surprised me the other month is that according to BeerAdvocate.com, the best beer in the world is brewed about an hour from where I live.

Heady Topper from The Alchemist in Waterbury, VT.

While I like it, I certainly wouldn’t call it “The Best in the World.” But from what I understand of the “beer ratings world,” it’s mostly about hops.

Lots of hops, so many hops you get punched in the face. In that regard, yes, Heady Topper has lots of hops, alright.

I don’t know what I consider to be “The Best Beer in the World.” It might be Switchback, also brewed near me in Burlington. It’s very drinkable, but still full of flavor, and not just HOP flavor.

What DrFidelius said, at least the first part. But Sierra Nevada Pale comes real close.

My Favourites:

  1. Pilsner Urquell the inventor of pils lagered beer, lovely hoppy and refreshing taste. Not too strong 4.4% ABV

  2. Budweiser Budvar a bit darker than Pilsner Urquell with a sweeter flavour, lovely. A bit stronger 5% ABV.

  3. Mythos lovely Hellenic beer and guess what, you can’t drink the water on the Greek islands, shame… Very light and refreshing, 5% ABV

Yuengling…then maybe Pabst.

The best bottled beer I ever had was Ayinger Oktober Fest-Marzen.

The best draft beer I ever had was Hacker-Pschorr Oktoberfest.

Both of these are German Marzen beers, which is my favorite style of beer (it’s always seemed the like the “beeriest” of beers, if that makes any sense, to me).

I beer I would love to try but haven’t found yet is Ayinger Celebrator Doppelbock.

Oddly, the most refreshing beer I ever had abroad was El Presidente in the Dominican Republic. Just the perfect thing to quench your thirst after (or during) a day on the beach.

Then I found it in an import beer store here, and it was undrinkable. It must only be good fresh.

HAH! No, it’s only good if you can see the Caribbean. Just like Carib. I drink Presidente/Carib by the caseload while in the Caribbean, but can barely choke it down at home.

Extremely subjective and varies even for most individuals. Beers (using the term loosely) that I can’t get enough of at one time of the year are too heavy, too sweet or too something at other times.

That said, and as I can’t get any more of a particular rauschbier my local brewpub once crafted with the aid of a few wandering gods, I’ll pretty much never turn down a Trappist ale, especially Westmalle Tripel.

I’ve had some Westvleteren XII last week and it was indeed very good… had some St Bernardus Abt 12 right after for comparison, and while similar, Westvleteren is definitely a better beer.

But in general I agree with the ‘can’t say/it depends’ crowd. It depends on my fancy, which type of beer I want… and then I have several favorites in each category.
