A nice slightly chilled cask-conditioned ale.
The one in my hand.
I haven’t been privy to the charms of Westvleteren XII yet but it’s on the list. Until then the St Bernardus Abt 12 and Rochefort 10 are as good as I’ve ever had.
Miller Lite

The correct answer is Chimay, blue label.
The cold one.
Smithwicks.
Well, I am a Heineken drinker. I was doing a research using google on what brand of beer, other people prefer to drink, when I encountered this interesting poll (http://www.zanda.com/matches/60050040000007/what-is-the-best-beer-in-the-world) on the site Zanda.com. They are doing a survey on what is the best beer in the world. Currently, Guinness has garnered more votes than other brands.
Nope. Free is at the top, followed closely by cold.
The problem with beer surveys is that they are populated by two groups: no-neck mouth-breathers without taste buds and people I agree with.
Coors *can *be the best beer in the world if that’s what’s in the ice chest at the end of a backpacking trip. Since I haven’t bought Coors for about 15 years, my pick is Mammoth Brewery’s IPA 395.
I recently had a Peace Tree Blonde Fatale that was totally amazing. Some other favorites:
St. Bernardus.
Arrogant Bastard Ale.
Bell’s Amber Ale
Sam Adams Old Fezziwig’s
Stone Old Guardian Barleywine(Batch #05)
Stone Lukcy Basartd Ale
Russian River Consecration
The best beer in the world is Aventinus [sup]*[/sup] by G. Schneider & Sohn.
[sup]*[/sup]Note: this applies for today only. Tomorrow the best beer in the world may be a Baltic Porter or a Scotch Ale
There is no possible way I could answer this question with the myriad of styles. It’s like asking, “what’s the best song in the world”? Depends on my mood. The time of year. The situation. What I have a taste for at the time. All that and more.
Without exaggeration, sometimes, for me, a Sam Adams Boston Lager is the beer I want. When I’m away from the States for any long period of time, that’s what I ask people to bring me. Not Sierra Nevada. Not Goose Island. Not Bell’s. Not Three Floyd’s. For whatever reason, that beer will always be near and dear to my heart, even though, of all the beers I drink, it probably makes up less than 2% of my annual consumption.
My real favorite beers? Don’t know if they’re the “best,” but my faves are:
Bell’s Two-Hearted
Bell’s Oberon
Three Floyd’s Dreadnaught
Goose Island Imperial IPA
Goose Island Bourbon County Stout
Anchor Steam
Pilsner Urquell, as served in the Czech Republic or nearby (I’m serious, this beer travels exceptionally poorly. I’ve never had a PU I’ve liked in the US)
New Glarus Raspberry Tart and Belgian Red
Hanssen’s Oude Gueuze
St. Bernardus 12
Rochefort 10
Maybe a slightly different question then: what beer do you enjoy drinking the most?
There are some movies I’ll watch every time I catch them on TV but I wouldn’t consider any of them the “best movie ever”. Likewise, the beers I consider the ‘best’ I tend to drink only rarely.
I like Live Oak Hefeweizen. Quite sessionable. And wheat beers are awfully refreshing in the near perpetual heat we get in Texas.
Deschutes Twilight Summer Ale (seasonal) and Smithwick’s aren’t too shabby, either.
Some of my friends like the super hopped IPAs though.
ETA: And if you look at the top ranked beers at Beer Advocate, you see the trend towards more hops and stouts born out. Most of the top beers on that site are IPAs, stouts, and Quads.
Don’t believe me? Drop by and we’ll go over to the tasting room.
I like big stouts. Goose Islands bourbon county stout is pretty good. Unfortunately I haven’t had some of the more highly regarded ones like Three Floyd’s Dark Lord, but hopefully at some point.
A friend’s bar has an old, tattered, yellowed, “FREE BEER TOMORROW” sign. It’s amazing how many people see the sign and return the next day, expecting a freebie.
My favorite beer is Scrimshaw Pilsner by North Coast Brewing Co. But I’m hardly a sophisticated beer drinker; I don’t like most IPAs, Pale Ales and Stouts.
