Anybody listen to Man Man?

A friend turned me onto them a few months ago, so I got both of their albums. Their latest one, Six Demon Bag, is really good, but that’s not what I’m here to talk about.

Their live show is flipping amazing.

Imagine five guys packed together as tightly as a band can be. Their instruments range from keyboards and guitars to melodicas and kazoos. Each member is proficient in every instrument he plays, and they all play several…well, except the drummer, he just drums, but exceptionally well. The whole time, they’re up there shrieking, yelling, yipping, and singing drunken bar chants. They don’t stop between songs, save for when the lead singer asks the sound guy to turn his keyboard down on his monitor (he apologized for “stopping the magic”). They watch their drummer for vocal cues, always exactly on the same page. It was a thing of beauty. I’m not really doing the show justice, as words on a page cannot even begin to describe the performance they gave.

They’re on tour now, so if you’ve heard (of) them, you must go. Tonight’s show was at the Magic Stick in Detroit, but it looks like they still have most of the country to see before they’re done.

Apologies for the double post, I just wanted to post a couple of pics to give you an idea of what their setup looks like.

Here and here.

I actually saw them at that festival that those pictures are from, and I was underwhelmed at best. I get what they’re doing, but I’d rather just listen to captain beefheart.
