Anybody reading Palahniuk's "Damned"? (boxed spoilers)

Just finished it this weekend, and I liked it quite a bit. I thought it was his best in many years. Things that particularly amused me:

  1. Hell’s economy runs on candy.
  2. The damned get to go out among the living once a year (on Halloween)–I particularly thought this was funny given that they have to get new candy somewhere.
  3. All the little girls dressed up in Madison Spencer costumes (strips of Hello Kitty condoms draped around their necks).
  4. She could no longer use Hitler’s mustache as a power object because Tiger Stripe ate it!
  5. Satan.
  6. Madison Desert Flower Rosa Parks Coyote Trickster Spencer.
  7. Did her parents remind anyone else of Brad and Angelina and their endless adoption of third-world kids?

I didn’t realize until I read one of the reviews that it’s the beginning of a trilogy. That makes the ending make more sense. I’m looking forward to the next one!

Anyone else like it, hate it, etc.?

Nobody? Hrm. Either we don’t have any Palahniuk fans around here or else they haven’t gotten around to reading it yet. Bumping to see which it is.

Palahniuk fan here, but I started to lose interest in him with “Lullaby”. God, does the guy repeat himself.

You might give this a try–it’s still Chuck, but it’s way better than his last few. (I absolutely hated Snuff, didn’t much like Tell-All or Rant, and was lukewarm about Pygmy, but I keep hoping he’ll get the magic back one of these days. I think he might have hit it with this one. It’s no Fight Club, but it’s a fun read.)

I’m waiting until it’s been reviewed more. I’m done being fooled into thinking a book will be good just because Palahniuk wrote it. His last few offerings have sucked so bad that I’m a lot more cautious now.
