Anybody recognise the artist?

Can anyone identify the artist of this painting? It was bought more than thirty years ago by my mother who died a couple of years ago but my sisters and I can’t remember the name of the artist (if Mum ever told us!).

I know it was bought from an exhibition of the artist’s work in London in the early 1970s but I always understood the artist was American. We’ve always referred to the painting as “New Orleans Mardi Gras” – but I’ve no evidence that it was ever called this by the artist. You can’t tell from the photos but it is pretty large - 54 inches by 42 inches.

You can see the signature in one corner – see a couple of the photos – but we can’t make out the name. I’ve tried typing all the variations of the letters into Google but no hits for an artist.

We would really like to find the name and anything else there is to know about him – still working? Other pictures he’s done? We think this might be one of a series of painting on the same theme.

A name would be brilliant but any suggestions on other routes to tracing him would be really appreciated.

Thanks Marcus

I"m moving this to Cafe Society, the forum for the Arts. They’re pretty bright people over there.

Thanks! I couldn’t decide between “factual answer” and “the Arts” for which forum to go for! Mind you, I think this might stump even the bright people in Cafe Society…

One bump!

Can anybody help with other ideas of how to identify the artist?

Thanks!

A good resource for artist searching is AskArt.com there’s a subscription, but you can get pretty far along with what’s free.

This sort of search comes up in my work sometimes and I’ve had some success. I couldn’t really see the sig in your photos.

Good luck.

I looked at “McMillen” (some results) and “Mundler” (no results).
Happy hunting.

Thanks, I’ll try AskArt.

No, the signature is hard to make out - actually it’s even harder on the canvas!
